If you only sign smart deals you probably aren’t a playoff team.

It's fine to overpay for superstars, and the Jays tried to do that with Ohtani, Soto, and Burnes, the problem is in the end those guys didn't neccesarilly take "the best offer" but took "the best offer in the market they wanted to play in". For guys like Soto and Burnes, NY and Arizona were more attractive destinations.
Where teams start to get into trouble is when you overpay too many times for guys that aren't stars but are more just okay pieces.
It's why they shouldn't be afraid to overpay for Vlad...even if he's not perfect he's the best chance they have at a superstar in this orgnaization.

Yup that's the exact type of move you'd want.

Luis Robert is a similar situation to Bo, they don’t need to trade him right away and are going to get Pennie’s on the dollar after a disappointing season. They will wait till the deadline after he has rebuilt some value. Unless a team is going to offer a trade based on his 2023 season.

Well they offered a lot for Burnes, they got out of the bidding for Soto at $600m, and they offered the same money for Ohtani. Unfortunately for this market they are always going to have to be the highest bidder and the highest bidder by a fair margin to get players to come to Toronto.

Why would a big time FA want to come to the Jays right now if you have other options
When the Jays were on the upswing over the last 5 years they had no problem getting top FAs
They are a dumpster fire now - both on the field and if you listen to rumours off as well

If they don't sign Santander the other White Sox I wonder about is Benintendi.
He was good for the Red Sox and Royals but hasn't been great for Chicago, although that team is a dumpster fire so it's not surprising.
30 years old, 3 years at $16.5M left on that deal.
If Chicago just wants to get out from that contract there are probably worse options and would be cheaper than signing somebody with similar upside in free agency.

Wonder what this means for the future. Does either side want a long term deal?

I would guess both do but can't agree on a number. The Jays will want to keep him for sure.

At face value it’s a good sign that they avoided arbitration, but I think that’s really all we can take from it for now.
Hopefully some good will on both sides can lead to a deal but I’m about 20% optimistic on that

Supposedly Vlad wants 10years/$450 million
I don't know if it's true, but if it is...
Yeeeesh
And if he walks people are going to blame the Jays?

Yep, he is top 10 offensive player in the league just entering his prime, you sign that deal all day long.

I’m not sure you do. The key is right now he’s a top 10 player but does he have the body and training push to stay primed for 10 years or 7 years at least? I’m not sure he will. I’m glad they signed this bridge because if they need to deal him at the deadline they can pull in a killing. But damn, a ten year deal is a tough one to swallow at that cost.

The guy is only 25, and weight isn’t a factor. It’s not like Soto is super in shape, Yordan Alvarez is a bigger player. Miggy was never in shape and he hit great. Vladdy first few years and Miggy’s first few years are pretty comparable.
They won’t get anything of real value for Vladdy, even if they traded him today. Look at what Soto got, it was a bunch pieces with the youngest player being 23, and Vladdy won’t get as much as Soto got.

Hector Gomez is reporting that the Jays are going to make another extension offer to Vladdy close to what he is looking for.
I would embed the tweet, but I can’t figure out how to do it.

I think that it was actually 15 years at 450M. Vlad was willing to not hamstring the team over the soft cap. A smart move by the jays would be to up their offer to a higher yearly hit with a shorter term.
Vlad also wants over 400M total.
400M for 12 seems fair to both sides.
It feels like nobody wants to do business with Atkins and Shapiro.

It does seem that way. The uncertainty of the franchise I feel had to play in to Soto and Burnes (and probably Ohtani’s) decisions.
Locking up Vladdy would take a little bit of that uncertainty away for whoever they are pitching to next

I don't see it or I would for you. I don't think Gomez has a twitter account?
