I like Horwitz, but he didn’t really have a regular spot on this team.

Unless they're also spending big on a DH, 3B and 2x corner outfielders I think this money would be better off getting a bat for one of those spots.
Obviously depends on what's going the other way, and if the Guardians are picking up some of the money that helps as well.
|
For sure that that money could be used elsewhere but I'm assuming in this case they really think highly of him to have him locked in for so many years and willing to take on the contract. It's not unmovable, and it didn't cost much to acquire him. If you can get more from him, the Jays may have a competitive advantage by having a really good second baseman. So I think there is some solid strategy from this move. The more I think about it the more I like it. Again, coming from an Atkins skeptic at best. Seems solid.

Again depending on the acquisition cost this is better than signing Gleyber Torres.

Solid addition within the infield,
Only concern, this likely does not address the offensive issues.
As the player moved, is likely to generate similar offense.
While Gimenez, is a better defender with speed.

A younger, slightly better stats wise, less flexible position wise, IKF.
That they are paying $96M over the next 5 years.
There was nothing wrong with IKF, I think he was underrated a bit. Gimenez is faster, bats with a bit more power, and probably pretty close to defensive abilities.
But this chap is locked in for a while, 2 years after Cleveland signed him to the long deal now has given up on him.
Shapiro back to his old Cleveland well to make a desperate splash during the meetings as all their FA targets start to trickle away.

To put a bow tie on the Soto thing, SNet article says the Jays didn't ask Vlad to be much a part of the process in trying to lure Soto.
IMO he was one factor that the Jays had that could have any sway for Soto, with funds being the same as others, but Shapiro and co. told Vlad to sit on the bench and not be part of the formal presentation.

I'd think if you're going to spend $750M on a player and competing against multiple clubs, you use all the bullets in the chamber, and he was a big one given the personal relationship they have.
Speaks volumes as to how much they value Vlad it seems.

I don't think that's truly an indictment on their value of Vlad, more more of how corporate they are. They think they're better salesman and wanted to control the messaging. It's common among the elite where they don't want to relinquish that control, and just want to stroke their own egos that it was them to close the deal. Frankly I can't see Vlad as being a difference maker here. I'm sure they spoke on the side regardless. Where they could've showed the most value is to sign Vlad long term and showcase it as you and Vlad will be friends for a long time. To have Vlad present when his term is only one year, kinda isn't the best.

Not saying Horowitz's bat adds a ton. But flipping him for Gimenez is another blow for offense in favour of defense.

In a vacuum I think it’s a tidy little trade that helps the team. But let’s see what follows as the the holes are still gaping

Not really as they have another Horwitz in Will Wagner. Also Horwitz wasn’t going to play 2B long term on this team and there really wasn’t anywhere else for him to go.
All in all I would say they sold high on Horwitz and bought low on Gimenez. They are better today then they were yesterday.

A quick check on their subreddit and Guardian fans are devastated. So that’s at least comforting

The Blue Jays and Guardians are in agreement on a four-player trade sending second baseman Andrés Giménez to Toronto. The Jays get Giménez and reliever Nick Sandlin for infielder Spencer Horwitz and outfield prospect Nick Mitchell. No cash is changing hands, so the Jays are absorbing the final five years of the Giménez contract. The teams have yet to officially announce the deal.

Should the Jays go after Kyle Tucker? They’d have a year to work on signing him to an extension, one of the best outfielders in the game.

They won’t be able to sign him, and the acquisition cost will be crazy.
His OPS was higher than Soto’s last year.

Horwitz has some value 2 other players.
I think our prospects are worth more than some think. Horwitz not a star top 100 prospect they don't have to be. ... my earlier point
Wrapping my head around this trade. Some positives. Just lot of money for light hitter. We need hitting. Maybe he rebounds . Semien light less power! Still young

Aw man, not Spencer "Horowitz" Horwitz! Good luck to him in Cleveland.
