You've identified why that's a 1 year deal.

When the Jays meet with the agent, I would interesting to hear their pitch.,..
Well, our farm team is poor, our bull pen was terrible, our offense was the worst in the AL east....

It goes something like this...
We know you will play in Toronto. Welcome to dunedin world class development facility that doesn't develop
You can have potato chips with vogelbach (not on team anymorel. Kirk likes tacos and george is massaging his injured groin while fighting over a peanut butter sandwich with vlad

Honestly. Its fun to think we can go toe to toe with the big boys but really, unless a player REALLY hated America, or REALLY loved Toronto specifically, or really valued our spring training facilities....what's the hook?

I really think this team needs to retool/rebuild. The more and more you see how directionless they are, with so much in limbo, the more you see how mediocre their roster is. If they are serious about Vlad/Bo, sign them. If they aren't, deal them. If they are serious about them, then deal some pitchers for a retool. This team has so many holes, that surely we can't keep patching one or two guys and hoping it works.

Would definitely second this, its a full rebuild in my view.
Key is the current management, would need to be fired,

Got a Score alert indicating the Soto sweepstakes should reach $700M, with all the teams in the running, including the Jays, currently in that ballpark. Walk away before the mistake is made. 12 years of any player is likely to be 6 too much. Soto included.

Meh, I don't care....it's not my money. It'd be fun to watch Soto in a Jays uni for the next 5-7 years.
Still think the Jays are only being used to drive the price up though.

Nah at this point with all these teams still involved, it's the Yanks driving it up IMO. I am surprised they are still in it at this price. They say there was no Judge cap, but this price would be over and above that reasonably.
So, they are in it to make sure, in order of importance 1) The Mets don't get him 2) The Red Sox don't get him or overpay 3)The Jays don't get him, or overpay. 4)The Dodgers don't get him.
Dodgers sound out at this escalating price but who knows.
The ace the Jays have is Vlad, who's a Dominican buddy of Soto. Yanks and Sox don't have that, not sure about the Mets. If Soto cares, the Jays are the least offensive to the Yanks if he bolts, than the Sox Mets or Dodgers.
And again Soto has won a WS. Of course he wants to win another, but it doesn't sound like the top priority of the team he picks. I think the Jays are probably 3rd in the race, with an outside shot. They just better be ready when the shoe drops to grab the other targets, because those other teams that also lose out on Soto will be knocking on the same doors, cash in hand.

I’m not entirely convinced he doesn’t have a favourite team. Everyone is saying he’s going to go to the highest bidder but if I’m reading between the lines that’s him and his agent wanting the highest contract in history to outdo Ohtani’s, correct. But, I’m still sure he has a preference internally which he’s hoping that team can step up and match the highest offer. That team could very well be the Sox. They have a positive reputation in the states along with the Jays and Orioles, for Dominican players. The Yankees don’t have that history down there. Anyway, while he’s trying his best to get the highest deal, I have no doubt he has his preferences.

It would be difficult to have "outs" for Soto, as the vast majority of the money I would guess is deferred.

They have reported he wants opt outs after year 3-4-7
Why would an opt out affect the deferral . They would just have it all in the contract what it looks like after opt outs

Would guess, if 80% of the money is in the last 3 or 4 years etc
If the player opt out within the first 3 or 4 years
They are walking away from a tonne of money
Its unlikely in my view

I do think it’s unlikely he’d exercise it given he’s aging at the same rate any of us are and it’s unlikely he’d get more as he gets older. But given the rumour is he wants it as his option, and it doesn’t cost anything but a risk if reputation damage to the teams, I think a team or two would give in. It’s incredibly ballsy and selfish to want it all but that’s the risk of being in bed with these high end guys. Imagine building your team around the assumption you’ll be getting this much in sales, only for him to pull the rug? No thanks.
