I could live with Bo being gone. I don't think he ever wanted Toronto and when his arb years are up you can't make him stay.
But Vlad is a Canadian citizen ffs. I think he likes it there, and is the face of the franchise. You should be pulling out all the stops to keep him.

In my view, Bo is gone, he will play out the last season and leave as an UFA
In terms of Vlad, he might be a very difficult player to sign.
I understand he likes Toronto,

Vlad seems to think he's worth way more than he is.
His bat can be one of the best in MLB, but he hasn't exactly shown a track record of consistency. And when his bat isn't going he's nothing more than an awful 1B, terrible base runner and prone to making stupid mistakes. I'll never forget him getting picked off at second to end the season when he wasn't even the lead runner.

Yeah. There was an excuse with his mom being sick. I don’t blame the guy for those troubles. But he hasn’t been that consistent. Even in his worst years though he has some good average numbers. I don’t believe him to be more than $27M. Just me personally.

I’m genuinely surprised. Would have thought it was a precondition to satisfy Vlad resigning. I was certain he would be the Jays DH. Sounds like the Dodgers are being smart. Pretending to be interested in Soto, meanwhile the only team who has signed other guys in the meantime. Seems like the other big gun teams are awaiting for their A1 Soto to make a decision.

I will agree somewhat with the rest of your post but the hi-lited?
The guy won a gold glove as a 1st baseman in 21, was a finalist the next year and regularly makes ridiculous stretch plays to get outs.
What am I missing here?
Yes his base running is an adventure and his bat goes cold at times (he seems to go through spells where he swings at pitches he cannot reach)... but defensively he is rock solid.
Weird flex.

His D has gotten worse each year since the GG
It’s (maybe) average last season but it isn’t good anymore / hasn’t been last year for sure

I could not be less excited for this season. I can't imagine I will watch many, if any, games.
These team just has a dark cloud around it.

Vlad sells tickets. I watch in part cuz vlad. We can pick apart his game but he is a star. It's difficult to acquire another vlad. One of few players that Might choose toronto. He maked tram better. What are they doing to keep him happy?

What does Atkins and Co do in general that makes any sense?
The Vlad ordeal is just another embarrassing example
1. Don't sign him long term as kid before arb years kick in and buy up some UFA years
2. Don't sign him after down year when you may get some discount for his long term security
3. Don't sign him last year when hes hot to give him a bit of extra security
4. Don't sign him (presumably) this offseason to help attract UFA's/ be the face of the franchise - Because why would he sign now.
5. Don't trade him with 1 year left to get more assets when the team looks like a non compete team. Run him to UFA for a comp pick (I guess if they are out of it trade at the deadline)
Why would Vlad now sign this close to UFA with the Jays.
Nothing this management team does makes any sense. They have the strategic vision and execution of a government agency.

Atkins may be the worst GM in the MLB. That's not hyperbole.

Vlad is a decent 1st baseman, however I don't think they should invest 300M+ on a 1st baseman,

Key with Vladdy, Jays I am sure would love to sign the guy, but the contract value has to work,
They can't have all of their salary tied to a 1st baseman

I mean, he was the #1 first baseman in the league by WAR last year - so I think "decent" is a bit of an undersell. He isn't always consistent, and had a very poor start to 2024, he was still 5.5 WAR (top for 1B and 11th in the entire league).
If you take a bigger sample set (2021-2024) he drops to 4th overall by WAR among first basemen, behind Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, and Matt Olson. I think 4 years is enough to say that's probably who he is - one of the top 1B in the league.

Meh. He has injury issues he cannot shake. Great backup, impossible to be a starter.
