But hey, if a bunch of the good to great players this team has are up for UFA and won't re-sign, maybe Conroy's hand is forced.

Literally the two star catalysts for that team are gone, though.

And they still got 93 points despite pretty much every single thing going wrong. They may not be a 111 point team anymore, but they should be somewhere in between.

But you can also see they are not a threat as a playoff team. Even if one of our goalies stands on their head they simply don't have a single game breaker on the roster.
Point being, Backlund if he cares about winning a cup would be foolish to sign another contract here.

A simple vote amongst the players for the next captain should solve it.

Come on now... Huberdeau only had 115 last season
List players that have out done that...it's a short list

I get that and honestly I love Huberdeau and feel like he'll rebound. I'm not a hater that way. I just know that he needs a play driver and/or fast puck carriers around him.
If we can facilitate that I'm way more confident in this team. Maybe I'm just frustrated at how things have gone and am more pessimistic than I should be.

By all accounts it sounds like Backlund really wants to win a Stanley Cup over money and legacy in one city. I admire that in any player as winning the cup is pinnacle of the sport and something you don't want to look back after your career is over. The reason he's asked to be traded as he fully knows it's not happening with the Flames so Conroy has his work cut out for him trying to convince him to stay. I think there's a better chance of keeping Lindholm on a big payday contract than trying to convince Backlund to stay but you never know.

Man catching up on this topic.
I think it's more than fair to suggest a contract for Backlund at his age has to be handled correctly. You can't go long term, and you have to be careful on dollars as well.
But the crew that are suggesting he's just a third liner or doesn't show up ... honestly don't know where the comes from. Just bizarre to me.
I hope they trade 2-3 of these guys, I want the reset. But if Backlund wants to go short term and reasonable dollars I'd be happy to have his character in the room to set the pace for the next wave.

What is that though?
3 years at 4.5M per? Would he even entertain that?
Cause IMO if you want a re-set, i think it starts with the guy thats been around 15 years.
He was OK last year and at times really good, but he also did his inevitable disappearing act for a couple decent stretches, although his defensive play was still contributing to the club. Obviously is a leader in the room as well.
Really not sure what the balance is for keeping him vs seeing what he can return. Though i think his market would be a pretty decent one considering his contract situation.

A career year offensively after being their best player in the Edmonton series all the while driving one of the top three lines in the league isn't just ok to me.
That's what I don't get.
I'd prefer a two year deal for sure, and they have to cap it at some point in term and dollars and just say no.
But if he wants to go year to year at $5M so you're not looking at a multi year albatross I'd do that too.

It might not even be about contract. If he genuinely wants to win, and if the Flames have to deal Lindholm because they can’t reach a deal on an extension, then Backlund might demand to be traded.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Lindholm's decision, Backlund possibly hinging on that, this year the 1st day of the draft will be nuts for the Flames I'm betting. Either signings or deals but there will probably be multiple.

As soon as a team trades a Backlund they are looking for the next Backlund. Flames should not trade him unless his demands are over the top (which means he is likely forcing a trade) and you keep him if his demands are reasonable.
Keep this guy until trade deadline of his last useful season assuming they are not a contender.

Top 3 lines in the league. Lol.
54 goals and 137 points between the 3 of them. Did not even make the playoffs.
I think you factor in analytics way too much.
There is a scoreboard and if you win you get points and make the playoffs.
Teams with a Top 3 line in the league make the playoffs.

#1 play driving line in hockey with min of 350 minutes together at 67.8% xGF%
That is elite for a guy with the level of responsibility he has.
1 Calgary Flames Mangiapane-Backlund-Coleman 67.8%
2 Boston Bruins Debrusk-Bergeron-Marchand 62.8%
3 Carolina Hurricanes Martinook-Staal-Fast 62.6%

He's 34 years old. He's coming off a solid season but it's likely to be diminishing returns after the expiry if his current deal. The Flame should have been looking for the next Backlund a few years ago. Maybe Ronni could be that guy but he's a ways away.

What a dink post.
LOL?

If you win you get points?
That metric is off the charts given his deployment. I should have said play driving lines and not driving a top three line for sure, but I'm pretty sure you know what I meant, and the salty condescending reply wasn't needed.
