Default The Anti GMO movement, is it the new Kony 2012?

Has anyone else seen a big jump in people hating on GMO foods and especially monsanto lately?

Its like you think your getting somewhere turning people who were against vaccines around, then you spend all your efforts trying to educate them on GMO and even sadly having to defend Monsanto considering the horrific amount of lies and BS being said about them.

Anyhow insert a good rant by Dusty Smith:

Naw, hippies and the uninformed have been hating on GMOs for nearly 20 years.

It's really sad actually, because while hating on Monsanto is so utterly justified by how disgusting and terrible of a company they are, they end up trivialising it by going "HURR THEYRE MIZING JELLYFISH WIT TOMATOESS!! DONT WANT TOMAT FISSSH"

I honestly don't know enough about the subject to engage in a debate with them, but there does seem to be a tonne of hyperbole regarding the subject. Then again, I'm not really on the whole "pay double for everything and eat organic" train either.

I like being able to grab the seeds of what I grow and save them for the next season. GMO's don't let you do that. The seeds of fruit or vegetables you get in a store won't grow a healthy plant.

I watched a documentary on Corn crops and the native corn crops in the south through Mexico are being pushed out with Monsanto corn pollen blowing in. It's destroying their crop. Paraphrasing.

Crops are being taken over by Monsanto product and Farmers are being sued and losing their land to that corporation.

There are more issues than just nutrition here.

Watched video - need to look at my post more... he he he

TBQH can you tell me what documentary that was?

As for the rest of your comments, these are mostly untrue and based on a lot of really bad misinformation by the anti GMOers. I'll get to them in a bit.

Obviously I'll have to make one...

Can't find the Doc. It was over 4 years ago, but it looks like it was bunked anyway.

I thought Food Inc touched on it, but can't be sure.

Here's a good starting point on top 5 myths about GMO:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/201...d-seeds-busted

Quote:
Myth 1: Seeds from GMOs are sterile.
Myth 2: Monsanto will sue you for growing their patented GMOs if traces of those GMOs entered your fields through wind-blown pollen.
Myth 3: Any contamination with GMOs makes organic food non-organic.
Myth 4: Before Monsanto got in the way, farmers typically saved their seeds and re-used them.
Myth 5: Most seeds these days are genetically modified
Also NOVA and Frontline on PBS did an excellent documentary called Harvest of Fear.

Its a must see!

So you're saying I'm just a $!##% farmer and I can't grow anything? That cuts deep man. Real deep.

Well its untrue, no matter who said it. Only very trace amounts could ever "blow over" onto a field and this will not affect those farmers.

Be interesting to see how those seeds "destroy them"

Haha, nah man just correcting misconceptions about monsanto and GMO, there is a ton of bad info out there right now.

I started at the point of being one of the many who thought Monsanto was doing evil, and slowly after reading more about the subject I see a lot of what is being said about them is utterly untrue and that while they have things to answer for, the things the are being accused of are mostly in the corner of liar liar pants on fire.

Oh man no way, not gullible, its hard to wade through rivers of sh*t in the anti GMO discussion, its so out of hand that there is plenty of people confused and mistaken. I have been wrong on a number of things through these last few years with my own personal journey on GMO, mind you I started pro GMO and still am today, but what I found most interesting was that I started anti Monsanto and now I feel kinda bad for them lol.

There is a GMO scare right now. Some asian countries are refusing wheat shipments from the US Pacific NW because of some "wild" GMO wheat that was discovered.
Quote:
Japan Tuesday restricted imports of feed wheat from the U.S., suspending shipments from the Pacific Northwest and allowing only Soft Red Winter grade to be offered in the next tender due to concerns over the recent discovery of an unapproved genetically modified strain at an Oregon farm.

"We have imposed two conditions for U.S. wheat to be offered in the next [feed wheat] tender. The grade should be Soft Red Winter, and shipments must be made from the Gulf coast," an official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries told Dow Jones Newswires.

The U.S. is currently investigating the discovery of the unapproved genetically modified wheat in Oregon. The state is a major producer of Soft White grade wheat, which is shipped from the Pacific Northwest. The SRW grade of wheat is produced in the southeast and exported from the Gulf of Mexico.
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-...11-703909.html

So this has the chance to be like the BSE crisis, depending upon what the USGA discovers in their investigation.

But there have also recently been some lawsuits that have been decided with respect to genetically modified crops:

Well, now that most of what I thought about Monsanto has been debunked, I guess EA really is the Worst Company in America!

I think the greatest worry for GM crops is their potential affect on Biodiversity.

Yep, I'm anti-Monsanto (and others) to the extent that patenting life-forms set a terrible precedent IMO, but pretty much every major news story about Monsanto turned out to be hyperbole at best and made-up nonsense at worst.

I can't wait for bacon flavoured tomatoes!

I actually appreciate threads like these.

There isn't a poster I trust most then Thor on this board to steer me in the right direction, and to do it in a tasteful reach around kind of way is just the bonus.
