Flames Flames interested in Alex Petrovic

It is Jim Matheson, so be wary.

With the Stone buyout, Flames will only have 3 RHS d-men in the organization. A 2 way deal for depth might fit a need.

Jim Matheson @NHLbyMatty
Saw former Oiler D Alex Petrovic at SportCentral golf tournament. He's looking for work. Hearing Calgary might be interested. He's right-shot, always coveted. He can be third-pairing

Petrovic is basically Michael Stone without the defensive ability.

Big, physical western boy who used to be decent in a sunny market.

7th Dman for super cheap? Takes Prout’s spot

Can’t believe how badly the Panthers handled the expansion draft. They gifted Vegas 2/3 of their top line so they could protect Petrovic.

Honestly, wouldn't be a bad option for a #7 spot. I was going through the free agent list for defensemen. Griffin Reinhart is a free agent this year. Good to keep seeing how badly the Oilers screwed up that trade.

I dont mind this if it means brodie and frolik are on the move. Hoping 1 year for 1 mil worth it to me but it based on brodie and frolik out for a righty forward and a pick

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to hear this is a PTO.

HurriFlames I could live with

This Oilamers trend needs to be snuffed in the crib.

That's the last organization you take scraps from. Who are we trying to emulate here? I don't care if he shoots on the right side. You're looking in the wrong place if you're looking for quality.

I would sooner let Valimaki or Kylington play out of position before signing Petrovic to an NHL contract.

Yeah, but injuries happen.

Right now, without Stone, we have:

NHL:
Giordano
Brodie
Hanifin
Hamonic
Andersson
Valimaki
Kylington

AHL:
Davidson
Yelesin
Valiev
Nielsen

We need two more AHL defencemen at an absolute minimum. During the course of a playoff run, it's likely you're dipping into your 8th and 9th defencemen. I could absolutely see where there would be value in having Petrovic, even if just for daily minutes at the AHL level.

Barely has the offensive ability.

If it is anything other than a 2-way deal, Treliving should have his UFA keys taken away.

Most of Treliving’s bad signings are ones that most fans saw a mile away.

I watched Petrovic a LOT in Florida. He's good for AHL depth only at this point. He can't think or anticipate the play well at all. Okay physical tools, but just an absolutely horrible instinct for the game.

I know there's little chance of him playing a lot should he be signed, but he really isn't very good at all.

I'm okay with this if its 1 year and $700K because he is a RHD. We need depth on the RHS, which is why I'm okay with this.

Also, there's this interesting comparison chart that makes it look like Alex Petrovic might be better at some things than Michael Stone. I'm not saying he's definitely better. I'm just copying this link for the sake of the conversation.

If I'm reading that table right and It is considered credible than he is definitely better than Stone. Especially when it comes to denying entry into the zone.

I take it as credible to an extent. Its just a matter of counting events, but I don't know who is counting the events. That's why I didn't give it as much weight.
