Acquiring Martinez probably means Hanifin gets moved in the off-season?
I hope not, given the age difference. Hanifin hasn’t hit the age where most defenseman peak, where as Martinez has reached the point that a downturn is likely soon.

I reckon if they are looking at Martinez then one of Giordano or Hamonic may be out longer than they are letting on.

Hanifin hasn't hit the age where most defensemen are in the NHL yet.

Hanifin is in his 5th full NHL season and is nearing 400 NHL games played.

Sure he can still grow, but I wouldn't expect to him to suddenly blossom into a Norris contender or anything.

I trade Hanafin all day every day for a top 6 forward with term. I think the Flames can survive without him and he has enough upside and skill for other teams to give up a very good young player in return.

Maybe not, but that is a pretty high bar that very few reach.

I think his odds of being a premiere player for a few years are decent enough though.

It's reasonable to ask whether it's the best plan to have 4 pre-apex D-men (3 LHD) with a forward core built to win now, both for their individual development, and team success.

In a perfect world, I'd love to swap Gaudreau and one of the LD's for a younger RHS RW, and a more established RD beginning his prime (25-28 yo).

Dumba or Montour might be accessible by trade (though if Hanifin is going out, it would be nice to bring back another bigger body like Manson/Parayko...Gudbranson or Connor Murphy as cheaper alternatives). Seth Jones is the pipe dream...though I wonder if CBJ would consider Gaudreau+Brodie before the deadline (maybe we get Stenlund or Bemstrom, too).

People made the same argument about how Lindholm was clearly just a 40 point forward when we acquired him.

Development isn’t always linear, it doesn’t always stop after a certain point. Players can make huge strides in their games in their mid 20’s. There’s endless examples of it.
