Default Pavel Karnaukhov discussion

So Karnaukhov got demoted from the KHL after posting 1 assist in 7 games.

The VHL is equivalent to the AHL in Russia.

In the VHL he seems to be thriving 11gp 4g 6a 10 pts +5 50.3%FOW 17:29 TOI

He is just outside the top 30 scorers in the VHL, and that is because he has played at least 4 games less than the leaders.

Just like Rafikov, there is nothing holding him back from coming over. The ball is in his court.

Hopefully he sees some of the opportunities that guys like Mangiapane are getting in the AHL (on the 2nd line) and may come over next year or the one after.

At least Pavel Karnaukhov has actually come to North America to play hockey already. Maybe it helps that he's from Belarus instead of Russia.

The good news, Karnaukhov is playing in the KHL playoffs, the bad news is he is hardly getting any ice time

for the playoffs 2gp 0pts 0:26atoi ... that's right he is getting one shift per game, which might be to be expected as CSKA is pretty much the best team in the KHL and I guess the focus is winning not development

The 11 regular season games he got in the KHL, at least he was used somewhat
11gp 1a 6:08atoi

The VHL (the AHL of the KHL) is probably where he should be in terms of development, at least there he was getting ice time:
24gp 7g 11a 18pts 17:50atoi

Karnaukhov's team CSKA was eliminated in the KHL semi-finals by Lokimotiv (Rafikov's team). He did get a bit more ice time as the playoffs went on (as high as 4 minutes on game), but ended up averaging 2 minutes per game in 7 playoff games.

Karnaukhov's KHL contract expires April 30th. So it is possible he comes and signs in North America for this upcoming season.

He might as well stay in the KHL, I can't see him getting more than an ECHL deal over here.

Considering Karnaukhov's age, Pavel just turned 20 years old on March 15 1997. Could he still come back as an overager in the WHL/CHL?

Even if he could be an overager wouldn't he also take an import spot? I don't think he's good enough for a team to use both slots for him.

So Karnaukhov was drafted out of the CHL, but after one season went back to Russia.

Does he still have to be signed within 2 years of being drafted now, or do the Flames get 4 years to sign him now?

I'm guessing the former, which would mean he has to be signed by June this year.

Because he left major junior before he was 20, the Flames have 4 years from his draft to sign him.

May want to look at this thread:

Karnaukhov's team won 7-2. They lead 3-0 in the finals now. He got a 2nd assist on his team's 3rd goal and put home a filthy forehand backhand on a shorthanded breakaway for the 7-2 goal.

As far as I can tell, he played #2C, net-front guy on the #2 PP, and C on the #1PK.

Decent game from him but I noticed that he was rarely in position for his teammates to make good use of him.

Any word if he comes back to North America next year? Or, what the Flames think of his future?

A big centre to add to the mix in Stockton next year would be nice. I thought he had some upside.

Let him stay over there and marinate.

Same with Rafikov.

IIRC the Flames will hold their rights for quite a while and maybe they turn into something down the road. Nothing like getting a cheap but fully developed, quality support piece when you're in the middle of your contender window and your core is all making big money already.

Like Taratukhin or Trubachev did.

If he's not at this years summer camp chances are you'll never see him again.
