I had that problem once i you tubed how to fix it had to take it aprart and use a heat gun on it and then re applied thermal paste that was about two years ago and it still works

Got a new ps3 Slim. Just need to download NHL and I should be good to go (After I spend an hour or so setting up my players since I don't have my profile)

I had lag when I played wireless. On wired connection now and it's fine.

I play without lag most of the time.
Who is your internet provider? I have High Speed with Shaw and its pretty stable.
Is your connection shared? If anyone is torrenting, using netflix or streaming you could have lots of lag.
Are you wireless? This could also cause an issue if your router is far away and it getting a bag signal.

http://www.pingtest.net/ Can test if you are losing packets.
There are plenty of things I can suggest to try and narrow down the problem.
Test directly plugging your ps3 into your modem wired. (If this has no lag its something on your end)
Test going through your router plugged in wired.
Give your ps3 priority in your router. (Set the IP address of the Ps3 to a DMZ host)

the reason I think its the game is I never have lag problems in any game besides NHL 14 and a lot of people have similar issues

Out of curiosity what other games do you play online? My guess is that most of them are probably server based.
NHL 14 from what I know uses peer to peer to host most of the games except for Drop-In games. This means that it is highly likely your lag is being cause by your router.

recently played battlefield 4, guild wars 2, borderlands 2. NHL 14 lagged for me in every form of online game; hut, drop in, club games. I might try plugging it in

Setting your router to DMZ your PS3, or set your firewall to open up NHL ports may helps out.
