Training Camp - Sept 24
No changes in groups or lines for the NHL group.
edit: actually two changes. Werner was sent to group 3 from group 2. Francis sent from Group 1 to Group 3, presumably to cover Zary (week to week with fractured ankle)

I can live with the forward lines. They’ll be better than last season
D pairings are just really dumb. Gutulzan like. Breaking up a dominant top pairing to spread the quality around the line up is literally what he tried when he got here and it was a disaster
Hanifin/Tanev was so good. Only this franchise would see that and be like “we gotta split those guys up”

I don’t know if I agree. Right now those are the only 2 truly legit top 4 D the Flames have. Andersson, Valimaki and Zadorov maybe can get there but you are putting all your eggs in one basket when you run a Hanifin-Tanev pair

Some people are really worked up about what's going on in training camp without really watching any hockey.

That was only a disaster because Brodie can't play the left side. Would've worked out amazing if he could have... but Gulutzan refused to accept it and kept forcing it.

I agree it would just be better as a fan to have a good top 4, but we have to work with what we have, and if Zadorov/Tanev and Valimaki/Gudbranson are the answers then we are asking very stupid questions

It was also a disaster because the logic of having a good player + bad player = average pairing when in reality it’s just three bad pairings on the ice at all times
Brodie was worse on the left but it’s not like Gio/Wideman had any chance vs McDavid

Whether it’s a good idea or not, it seems pretty clear that Sutter prefers to try and balance the lines and pairings as opposed to going for a top heavy approach.

I mean, hold the phone cause Eichel could literally be happening while we're in camp.

Yes, but Hanifin and Andersson were great in 2019–20—enough so to want to see if they can be that good once again.

And I think that’s easily the most palatable pairing here despite really poor results last year
But Zadorov/Tanev? Don’t see much upside. Tanev is at his very best elevating the game of a offensive puck mover like Quinn Hughes or Hanifin to an extent
Then I don’t see a path to success for Valimaki if he plays with the two way disaster known as Gudbranson for a coach who doesn’t seem to be much of a fan.

Maybe they could try having more than two good defensemen. Crazy idea but some teams have made it work.

Are you saying Andersson is NOT a legit top 4D?
I strongly disagree with that assessment.

Gudbranson is just such a black hole that any defender paired with him is in a bad spot to succeed. Hanifin, Zad, or Valimaki. Looks like valimaki gets the short straw to start, which isn't surprising given his play last season. I'm not optimistic about the d pairings right now but thats mostly because of Gudbranson, if he drops to 7th on the depth chart I like the team better.
As far as Zad -Tanev , and Hani- Anderson, it may not work but training camp is a better time to try it than mid season.

Training Camp - Sept 24
I bet by mid season the defence looks more like…
Hanifin-Andersson
Valimaki-Tanev
Zadorov-Stone
Kylington-Gudbranson only playing spot duty based on opponents or injuries.
My guess is that Sutter is starting Valimaki lower on the depth chart to make him earn it. He also has less pressure there so he can work on his game with less minutes until he is truly ready for that bigger role.
