There are very nice wealthy areas surrounding Detroit.
Yeah, despite it's reputation (which in many places is well deserved), there are places in the Detroit metro that make Mount Royal look like a cute middle-class neighbourhood. There is a ton of money in that area...it's just all in the suburbs.
The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!

Well, no one is actually from Detroit, they are from Royal Oak, Gross Point, Bloomfield Hills... When I worked in Toronto I’d encounter customers from these places and eventually they would say it’s “near Detroit”. Kind of like people who are from St. Albert. Calgarians always say Calgary, not Okotoks or Edgemont.

I've never heard anyone from Okotoks, Airdrie or Cochrane say they're from Calgary. Most are really pointed about stating they're from those towns. Usually to out of towners they'll state it as "I'm from Cochrane, just outside Calgary", and in the Calgary area they just say the name of the town/city.
Same way outer Detroit people likely say "I'm from Royal Oak, just outside Detroit" to out of towners.

Springbank, including Elbow Valley, the areas up closer to the schools, or Stonepine is kind of like those rich suburbs of Detroit. Sometimes people say "Springbank" to people in Calgary, but that's usually like saying "Bowness" or "Mount Royal". To people from elsewhere, they usually say they are from Calgary. Oddly, the addresses for a lot of the area is 12345 Township Road 241 Calgary even though it's outside the city limits.

Yeah, Springbank I hear as Calgary usually, and if that's the same as those suburbs in Detroit then point taken.

Detroit sportscaster with a blisteringly epic rant against Ken Holland.
Quote:
“You know who Ken Holland is?” Costa continued. “Ken Holland is a trust fund kid. Ken Holland inherited this big fortune. Ken Holland stepped in as a general manager in 1997, the Red Wings already a Stanley Cup champion. Scotty Bowman built that thing up. Jim Devellano built that thing up. European scouting ahead of its time built that thing up. He was handed the GM chair, just like a rich person hands down their fortune to their son or their daughter, who didn’t work for it, didn’t earn it but is now going to benefit from it. And Ken Holland would go on to win a Stanley Cup in ’98, when money was no object. (Owner) Chris Illitch opened up the pocketbook and they won it in ’02. Salary Cup comes in the mid-2000s, they ride that to a Stanley Cup, but when it was time for Ken Holland to build on his own merits, you saw what happened to him. Trust fund kid. Everything was handed to him. When he had to work for it, the franchise crumbled.”
NOPE just CP continuing it's worst tradition of ruining every other news thread.
P.s. Holland will not help Edmonton. We shouldn't trade Gaudreau Monahan or Tkachuk. Jankowski is okay. Bennett might break out....again. Neal has gotta go, too bad he played himself into untradeable status. We gotta build a new arena soon. Gotta trade Brodie for way more than he's worth. Etc.

To be honest this only applies within Canada, if I meet a Canadian in the UK they just apply the nearest large City, they are from Vancouver or Calgary or Toronto, the Maritimers just use the province as do the Saskatchewaners but the Manitobian's go with Winnipeg, it comes down to what are the chances of the person you are talking to knowing or caring about which 'burb you come from, it's just easier to say the recognisable city or Province, the average Brit knows 6 or 7 Canadian cities, when I came to Canada I was just from London, saying I was from Mitcham was pointless.
