Surely bench style is the best way to go from a capacity standpoint, and it is used all the world over. So why cry about it?

Compared to the old SD160s, with the U2s, you can:
- sit together with three friends
- get from a window seat to the aisle more easily
- have more empty space in front of your face (you feel less "boxed in" while seated)
- stretch out your legs when the number of people on the train is less than half of the seat capacity
Compared to the new SD160s and the S200s:
- more seats
- more forward/backward seats (less lateral gs for a more comfortable ride)
- less people tripping over your feet when seated
The main advantage of the bench is of course capacity, but it's clear that we should not prioritize capacity above all else, as few would argue for a car with no seats. There are better ways to address capacity issues (like the downtown subway).
