As we've seen before, the NHLPA wants to make sure the player is getting the most $ at UFA time.
So there is pressure externally on Tavares to at leat give the impression he's driving up his value through visits like this.

... ok, San Jose proper isn’t that phenomenal, but you realise these guys are probably living in San Francisco and the more affluent spots around the Bay Area right? It’s not like the Golden State Warriors all live in Oakland.
Plus, San Jose still has a lot of miles left, they’ve been good at working young guys into and up theor lineup. They’re going to be good for a while.

Yeah, San Francisco is awesome. Who wouldn’t want to live there?

The people are arguably more smug than your rhetorical question.

They're terrible with little to no prospect of even coming close to competing at the level the mediocre Islanders did that he may want to leave. So I'm guess not.

I have a feeling he'll end up in California, just because God hates the Flames.

Tavares isn’t willingly go to go to one of the worst teams in the league. Don’t be ridiculous.

“A lot” of miles left? I doubt it. The Sharks have some miles left, and I don’t expect them to tumble to the basement this year or next year, but their core of players is old. At every position except in goal they are approaching their twilight. I think they will remain in the same bubble with several other Pac Div teams for the next couple years: competing for a playoff spot, but not ever a Division lock.

Yeah, I guess that’s what I mean. I don’t see them as bottoming out any time soon, and with Tavares I think they stand a chance of maintaining their pace longer.

I don't think we are one of those five teams, but maybe the Flames could benefit off the cap unloading of those teams?
I think it has been confirmed in reading between the lines that Tavares want's to go to a contender. Which I think was quite obvious with Lou Lamourillo coming in and cleaning house to make the Islanders look like a contender.
Safe to assume he won't to the teams that are clearly not contenders right now.
Arizona
Buffalo
Detroit
Ottawa
Vancouver
Carolina
New York Rangers
Then there's the "middle of the pack" teams that have the notoriety, but have struggled in recent years and/or too many question marks as of today. Too much of a gamble.
Montreal
Chicago
Edmonton
Florida
Calgary
Phillidalphia
Columbus
The teams that have their roster locked up, just made notable moves, or just straight up can't afford him with out moving out big names. (Frankly the teams that I would be shocked if they got him)
LA Kings (Kovalchuck signing)
Pittsburgh
Tampa Bay
Washington (On the verge of re-signing Carlsson)
Leaving these teams that I believe all have a shot at signing Tavares. Attractive hockey markets, cap space, success in reccent years, and a clear goal to win as of today.
Dallas
San Jose
St. Louis
Colorado
Vegas
Nashville
Anaheim
New Jersey
Toronto
Winnipeg
All in all I believe that the 5 teams that he will meet with are
San Jose
Toronto
New Jersey
Vegas
St. Louis

SJ is just one part (~1M people) of a bigger ~7M person area. It's expensive as hell, but a great region to live in. Especially with the type of money he'd have.

Us poor non-millionaires...
I have a friend who just moved from Toronto to SAN Fran... from 2600/month to double that... in US for less sq/ft. Ouch.
But yeah, for millionaires, no brainer.
