I guess the real question then is how likely is it that such a framework could be set in place prior to a trade? I think it is pretty unlikely.

Trading for a guy in the year before his UFA status almost guarantees you pay him whatever he wants. Which really doesn't sound like a Treliving move.

My apologies for speculating in the trade speculation thread.
|
Sure, but the issue I have is with moving "almost anyone" for no guarantee beyond one-year of Panarin on the roster.

Flames traded for Hamilton and had a deal in place within 4 days.
I have a hard time believing there was no indication of what the player wanted prior to the deal.
But thats just me spitballing, guessing. To your point, yes its pretty unlikely but who knows.

1 year of Panarin is worth about a 1st and a decent prospect

These kind of deals would almost always require a first rounder. I don't think Brad wants to give up yet another high draft pick.

Hamilton was an RFA. Panarin is a pending Russian UFA.
There is a huge difference there.

This test of patience has been all about going after the right guy. Panarin is that guy.

Don't apologize for speculating, I am just pointing out that as a GM you likely have to treat this as a rental situation rather than an acquiring a core player situation.

I think that is about right. There may be some room for the Flames to juggle a three-team deal under these circumstances, but that is the only way I see it as possible.
**BTW, is it just me, or have three-team deals become more commonplace in the past year or two? I expect we will continue to see more of these.

You (and Textcritic) are right. I just got excited, didn't think the whole thing through.
I'd make a crappy GM. Only get work in Ottawa, maybe Montreal.

It's weird that a player would refuse to discuss re-signing until the fall, right?
What's the difference?

Assuming he is overseas for the summer.
I’m Not saying it’s a great reason.

Flexibility.
Seeing what free agency sets the market at for his comparables.
Desire to see what happens with coaching and management.
Desire to perhaps return to Russia.
Power play to exert leverage.

I absolutely remember Treliving saying the were comfortable with what Hamilton was asking for before the deal was done. Whether that was through discussions with Hamilton's agent, or taking the representation of Sweeney.
I am pretty sure NHL GM's trust each other so would expect similar situation if a pending UFA is being dealt.

Kessel is willing to be traded from the Pens (but also happy to stay). Phil Kessel's top preferred trade destination? The Coyotes with Tocchet, but Arizona has told the Pens a trade would not work out for financial reasons
https://theathletic.com/399288/2018/...ins-via-trade/
Also of note, according to the article, the Coyotes only want to reach the salary floor.
