Their stats aren't that far apart. Rittich looked great as a backup starter (not so much as a mid game replacement) off the bat. His stint when he had to carry the load was definitely not great at 1-4-1 with almost every game sub .900. He bounced back a bit in March but sucked again at the end of the season (like everyone else).

Gillies looked very good in more games than he looked bad in IMO. He wasn't great in two non-starts in Nov. and Feb. But then he was lights out starting Feb. 22 for 3 games, bad again for 4, but great in his last two games (one was a loss against the Jets who were flying then, but he only let in 2 and was .928). He beat Vegas.

King's back up was and is likely Jack Campbell.
Yea but like you say, you can't adjust for how either team played. And that was a massive difference last year. What Rittich's save percentage prior to being the starter? My point was that a team like Vegas could grab Rittich, and bump subban down to the A, and only gain an asset. It litterally only cost them $125. And it harms a rival. I don't think Rittich clears waivers in a month of Sundays.

The only way Gillies makes the team is if Rittich completely fails in the pre-season. If Rittich is even adequate or decent, he will be the back up in Calgary and Gillies will go to Stockton as the number 1 and "marinate". It's just simple asset management.

With Smith's contract expiring, it is imperative that the Flames figure out if Rittich is a legitimate NHL goalie and he will be given a long look. If Rittich can play 30 games in the NHL and post reasonable numbers, Flames could run with Rittich and Gillies next season without signing a veteran goalie.

I think it is pretty evident that Rittich has little to no trade value. He would be in the exact same position with any team that traded for him in that he would have to clear waivers and he is not a proven NHL backup at this point.

Curtis McElhinney ( best goalie draft by the Flames in the 21st century by NHL games played: 186) was picked up by the Leafs on waivers from Columbus. Columbus would rather have Joonas Korpisalo as their backup.

My point from a few posts earlier responding to the start of this chain was that If Gillies outplays Rittich, you waive Rittich.
Not saying you waive Rittich right away, or if all else is equal. I am not in favour of burning the asset.

However, if you have a clear difference and hold steady to waiver eligibility for asset protection over what is best for the team and the better performing player, then you hurt the team more than help it.

Note the use of "if" and "outplays"

Wow, is that ever an impressive non-sequitur. Not even my worst students who have learning disabilities and english as a second language make that kind of logical fallacy.

To be fair though even reliable 1B-type NHL starters have very little trade value in the NHL. Its funny because goalies seem to be able to land respectable, sizeable contracts but they don't often garner much more than a pick or two in a trade.

As an aside (and not trying to derail), but Arizona was rumored to be looking to trade for dougie Hamilton a couple year’s ago (it was that rumoured lame offer of duclair for Hamilton and then chayka spread the word they talked trade, Toronto media indulged and that led to Burke’s comment of 20 first rounders and skating like a deer....I think?).

Anyway....then Arizona claimed Freddie off waivers.

It just occurred to me that was Arizona maybe trying to be a potential home for dougie by having Freddie?

Tin foil hat doesn’t fit right anymore maybe.

Yea but let's not forget it was Curtis McElhinney that he's using as a comparabile. Here is a quote from his wiki:

He played the entire 2008–09 NHL season with Calgary as Kiprusoff's backup and recorded his first NHL win in his 14th game of the year, the last of the regular season, in a 4–1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on April 11, 2009.

Halfway through the next year the flames dumped him for vesa toskala.

Wouldn’t they have to waive Subban in order to send him to the AHL and thus lose him for nothing?

There's a massive difference between claiming a 14th forward and claiming a backup goalie.

Claiming Rittich off waivers would cost the claiming team $90,000, then Vegas would almost certainly lose Subban on waivers. So, in the exchange, they'd be getting an older, more-expensive player who had worse stats last season... and why? To slightly inconvenience a team that missed the playoffs last year anyway?

Vegas got him off waivers last year. He's not exempt.

Huh. Good point.

Just left looked it up, there is another requirement and that's years since his first NHL contract, which would be greater then 2 at 24 years of age. My mistake.

So take Vegas off the list, but the Jets would claim Rittich off waivers. He is still getting claimed.
