Call me a curmudgeon but I feel like it needs to be mentioned that the Winnipeg franchise playing in this game will be wearing a jersey that literally belongs to the Arizona Coyotes franchise.

I think True North actually bought that logo and uniform from the NHL a few years ago

I've always said that a teams history stays with the fans anyway.

Yup. The NHL took over the trademarks of a number of defunct teams. They still hold the marks for the Whalers, Thrashers and Nordiques, among others. Perhaps of mild interest is that the mark for Atlanta Flames has lapsed in both Canada and the US, though the copyright to the logo itself would still be owned by the Flames.

Whoops, ok but they're still celebrating a history that belongs to another franchise. Sort of. I mean that particular history doesn't belong to them, but they may or may not be celebrating that history vs their own... or maybe not. I may, in fact, be just yelling at some clouds right now to be honest.

Ok but (using the word "literally" in its literal sense) franchise history literally moves with the franchise. Like the records, players, stats, etc literally (again, in the literal sense) stay with the franchise regardless of where it moves to.
Dale Hawerchuk's #10 is only officially retired in Arizona, for instance. While fans may not like a new player wearing that number in Winnipeg, it's not actually retired there - nor can it be, because Dale Hawerchuk never played for the franchise that is there now.
Edit: I get it though. Fans be cray-cray.

Former Coyotes players Keith Tkachuk (7), Jeremy Roenick (97) and Teppo Numminen (27), along with former Jets players Bobby Hull (9), Thomas Steen (25) and Dale Hawerchuk (10), have been inducted into the Coyotes Ring of Honor, but none of them had his number retired.

Jordan Weal, last season.
And I'm sure if the current iteration of the Jets wanted to retire Dale Hawerchuk's number ten they could.

Yeah, the Wild retired #1 for "The Fans", for crying out loud. I don't think anyone would stop the Jets from retiring Hawerchuk's number.

The Phoenix Coyotes (successor to the Jets) retired Hawerchuk's No. 10 during the 2006–07 NHL season.
On April 5, 2007, Hawerchuk was inducted into the Phoenix Coyotes Ring of Honor[1] joining Bobby Hull and Thomas Steen. The Jets/Coyotes franchise retired his number 10 on April 5, 2007. Unlike Hull and Steen, who were honored in Jets colors, Hawerchuk's number was retired in Coyotes apparel, despite the fact that Hawerchuk never played in Phoenix and all of his time with the team was in Winnipeg.

You're right though. Even though everything says "retired," it looks like the only numbers actually retired are Doan's #19 and Gretzky's #99. Weird.
...and I don't think a franchise is allowed to retire a number that has never played for them before (other than a league-retired number), but I could be wrong on that for sure. I mean, I have been wrong at least once before, so it's possible it could happen again.
Edit: Anyway, I'm done yelling at the clouds now. It was just a brief moment of " they're not even the same franchise, lol" but I'm over it.

The new Jets old Jets connection is strange. Just do a Cleveland Browns. Call the Coyotes an expansion team made up of former Jets players and call the new Jets a continuation of the old team made up of former Thrashers.

I don't believe the league has any rules on what numbers a team can or can't retire.
They may step in behind the scenes and say, "Edmonton, why are you retiring Lindros' when he never played for you? It looks silly" or, "Edmonton, you need to take it easy on the jersey retirements, soon you wont have enough numbers for your current roster.." But they pretty much let the teams do what they want and probably o Ly ask to be kept in the loop for TV purposes.

Yes. The Flames retro red sweater is way better than their whites.

Ok, but the retro white is better than the current white jersey.
This will help lead to a full home/away retro set, which everybody should be in support of.

I prefer the retro white. I think it's because it was the home jersey so it brings back feelings of watching the game at the 'Dome when I was a kid.
It'll be cool to see it on the ice again. They haven't worn it in 25 years. Literally since the moment Pavel Bure scored in double OT Game 7. It's the only Flames uniform Jarome Iginla never wore.
