Was considered to be a first rounder but I think that became less likely over time. I figured he would go in the late 2nd.

JD Burke of Elite Prospects was just on TSN 1040 in Vancouver and said getting him in the third round was pure larceny and that this will be the best pick of the second day.

I would be more than happy with that from the #72 pick, especially when it was free. Kylington is maturing into a solid second pairing guy. Pair Poirier with the right guy, and some of those defensive gaps aren’t insurmountable.
Solid pick.

@DarrenWHaynes
The d-zone is where the opportunity for improvement is for Poirier, but given his significant offensive tools and his skating, which has been called “elite”, seems like a reasonable use of a third round pick, especially given it’s one they didn’t possess at this time yesterday.

Was gonna say - like picking Andersson (safe) and Kylington (riskier) in the same round.

Hopefully this fall makes him work even harder and prove everyone wrong.
Worth throwing a dart at him with this "free" pick.

I mocked up what this guy might look like in a Flames jersey, let me know what you all think... I feel like my skills are improving!

I like this pick. You can't teach offence, but you can teach defence. Same warts as Kylington (who has taken MASSIVE steps defensively), Fox (who is an every-day NHL'er now), and even Hanifin (who basically stated that his coaches never got him to play much defence until the NHL).
See what he turns out to be, but this is a 'sexy' pick.

Well Rasmus fell for conditioning which I consider the dumbest reason to pass on a prospect
Like I’m sure millions of dollars will motivate a guy to get in shape. There were zero concerns about his actual play and he had the bloodlines plus played against men as a 15 year old

I like the pick. Really helps the defensive depth.
Does anyone know why Poirier was ranked higher than Villeneuve?

I'm not a fan of defensemen whose defensive game is nonexistent. But, he's a Flame now, so I am wishing him the best and hope he can grow as a player.

It's funny how some expect a perfect prospect outside the top 5
But his skating
But his offense
But his defense

Guy breaks down his game. Calls his stickhandling and shot elite.

Do they Flames take another Dman at 80?
Benning is someone I think could be a good dman.
