I know a few people who have successfully gone back to their (former) employers and have basically said "I'll sign this if you give me a higher severance" without lawyering up. This was a few years ago, and was with larger companies who probably planned to have some push back/additional severance awarded. Most would prefer to just award more than deal with lawyers as it's less costly and saves time. YMMV.

Didn't work for me when I personally called the HR. Was told I was welcome to pay up for a lawyer to initiate it. They played hardball with me, as well as most people. Wasn't worth it as I wasn't there long enough to make a big enough bump relative to the stress and potential cost incurred. So I played my card, they played theirs, their bluff worked.

However a former coworker who had been at same company over 10years also tried that... same response. But he DID get a lawyer involved and after some stalling and more noise they eventually bumped his settlement up. Then he managed to find new work right away so he scored super huge.

Did paying out the lawyer more than cover his increased payout?

Although he never told me dollar nor percentage increase, he did say it was well worth the effort no question about it. There were other circumstances that also enabled his argument and supported severance re-evaluation: amount, seniority, age, market, relatively early in Covid, relatively deep pockets at company.

Vermilion (VET:TSX) nailed quite a few today. COO gone. Not surprising after they got the band back together. The whole business model was flawed pre-covid. Hard to run a REIT like structure with a rock solid dividend when your FFO is linked to a volatile commodity. The banks are culpable in keeping the charade going even if they made them cut the divvy.

Anyway it'll be curious to see what they do moving forward.

Imperial previously announced they would e making cuts, now we know what the numbers will be. 200 layoffs in Canada (out of 6 000) plus they have already eliminated 450 contract positions so I guess that's 650 people without jobs.

An a smaller scale another US service company is exiting Canada as of mid December. 10 people gone but I don't know if that number is Calgary only or if it includes their Edmonton location too.

My family member at Husky who has been there for 30 years expects to lose her job at the end of December with a lot of other people.

Its already started. But a lot of people are supposed to hear on Monday about where they will stand in the new company.

Most (all?) Husky employees are now cenovus employees.

Yeah, I heard that there's going to be a mass exodus next week at Husky as well.

Heard earlier in the week from a CP member in fact that WCP will cut 91 people as part of the NAL acquisition. I’m not sure if that’s before of after including Torc people as well but I don’t think so.

I imagine most of the casualties will come from the Husky side. Unfortunate but inevitable.

Abysmal that our Fed gov’t has taken a raw situation and stood idly by. This has real human cost.
