No to 6 year contract. Truthfully i don't feel comfortable at 5 years. I would trade Brodie and wait on an extension for Hamonic. See how the youngsters are doing during season and maybe trade him for forward help at deadline. I would also be all right with them letting him walk as a F/A. I rather he walks than be stuck with a 5/6 year contract for $5 + million per.

Not shocked that this is the scenario. I figured they could keep one of Brodie or Hamonic but not both. Hamonic makes way more sense to keep. I would prefer a 3-4 year deal around $5M per.

I imagine there is some framework in place for a Brodie trade at the draft.

Rather they let him walk in a years time than hand out that contract. The league is getting younger, and 1st tier RFA's are getting paid after their entry deal. It's not going to be to long before the 2nd tier rfa's get paid also. The 29/30 year old" get paid free agency" is not going to be along much longer, especially for 2nd tier players. Lets get ahead of the curve instead of behind it, when it comes to older FA's.

Good time to see what his demands are. Try and work out a deal, if one can't be reached, trade him this summer while his value is at it's peak.
Hopefully a deal can be reached somewhere around 4 years. Takes him to approx 33 years old.

That worries me a ton. I'm afraid by year 3 he may turn into an Andrew MacDonald and we will be saddled with a large unmovable contract.
I hope for 4.85 @ 4 years with a full NMC or somewhere in that area.

I did not know that. Well some form of protection for him to get a hometown discount.

In a league where parity is normal and rare to have teams now totally top heavy, I feel the Flames have depth to compete. Where they need to change it up is to get rid of guys who aren't well conditioned, for guys at the very least who are average or better skaters. That's your starting point. So I'd dangle Neal, Monahan and Brodie as the three to change up. Perhaps Frolik can be dealt with a rookie to get a bigger guy as well. Lastly, I'd deal the 1st rounder with any of the above to get a solid top line upgrade. The rest for the most part I'd keep. You just have to have a variety of talents on the team, but the league is quickly moving to a mobile league as your starting point - speed is on trend, and if all 4 lines have it, it wears down other teams.

In his prime, reasonable contract, wants to be here, on a relatively soft team he stuck up for a team mate (probably went up a weight class), played through a broken jaw. It would be a shame to trade a guy like that so I hope this rumour is true.

I think people are going to be quite pleasantly surprised at Hamonic's contract. His comparables are quite varied - he doesn't have offensive stats to throw at Treliving, he wants to be here and he seems like a guy not prone to big demands. He likely gets some sort of limited NMC to protect him from expansion.

Strongly agree...just dont think his body will age well. I would be very hesitant about anything over 4 years.

I'm not sure I'd be willing to give him a NMC nor do I think the Flames would be.
Hanifin and Valimaki should be locks for protection spots. A NMC for Hamonic would mean that both Andersson and Kylington are unprotected (along with an old Giordano).
