Default Flames will name captain this season

Nault and Steinberg claim they have heard the team will be naming a captain this year.

Tanev is the guy they are speculating.

That would be an interesting pick. I guess on brand for the type of hockey they'll be playing.

I thought they would potentially wait to name a captain and basically see how the next season plays out with Tkachuk potentially getting the C if he signed an extension.

FWIW Nault had these 3 in his ranking in this order and Steinberg agreed.

1. Tanev - heavy favorite
2. Lucic
3. Backlund

Meh. If it is Tanev, it's pretty telling about where Monahan and Tkachuk are at in their development. Both were drafted as future captain material, and are now not even in the conversation. Instead it's speculated to be going to a guy that hasn't even been with the team for a full year yet.

Just more gas to throw on this Springfield tire fire of an offseason, as much as I'm sure Tanev is a quality guy.

It's probably because Monahan, Tkachuk are probably not going to be around long

You really go out of your way to find the most negative spin to everything.

Is it a coincidence they signed Gudbranson the same day this rumour came out?

Gudbranson for Captain.

I would roll 3 A’s until a true leader emerges. I like having long term captains so Tanev would be a 1-3 year filler. Have this team play for each other and all take ownership of their actions and see which leaders emerge

If it were me I would burn a year of rotating 4 assistants then go from there. Tkachuk is the ideal long-term captain if you're serious about re-establishing a core. And while I think Tanev is the appropriate choice right now, to me it would indicate the uncertainty of the team and the lack of a long-term plan.

Has Sutter ever coached a team without a captain?

I would prefer to roll without one, but maybe there really is someone in the room with the Captaincy in them.

If we must have one, my vote would be Backlund. He deserves it most IMO. Fight early pressure to be something he wasn’t, survived multiple team turnovers, formed himself into one of the games premiere two-way players and has quietly become one of this Franchises best ever.

I think there’s a chance he can hit a late career surge with C on his chest, not unlike Giordano who was always good but really became something different with the absence of Iggy.

I just think it's great how it's the first page and we already have two excellent candidates for meme-captains.

Tanev "plays the right way". I would be happy to see him follow Gio. I don't think tenure should really come into play when it comes to naming a captain.
Iggy and Gio were both well spoken, but not "loud". They led by example. Tanev seems to have the same quiet "get #### done" attitude.

1. Lindholm
2. Tkachuk
3. Hanifin
4. Andersson

Those are my choices.

I'd be ok with Lucic. His GAF will help.
