I mean sure, if you want to be a complete ####ing idiot and take MacLeod instead of the Elbow River pathway, that'll happen... I'm pretty sure that the Elbow route is actually shorter, too.

This wasn't to show common sense. Also poor route choice can be explained by artificially padding out distance traveled to match up with the Amsterdam dunker.

After all they had an artificial mileage to match.

Especially because he should have taken his bike to 7th Ave, jumped on the CTrain, went to Chinook Station, and been "a large parking lot" away from the Home Depot.

If their objective was to do it entirely by bike, that's not even the best Home Depot to go to from downtown. Marlborough would be a better bike route with less distance spent sharing a road. It's also about the same distance as Macleod Trail. North Hill would be even closer, but includes fewer separated bike paths and would require going up the hill from downtown.

Plus, as mentioned, if you don't care how you get there, just hop on the train and all three of those Home Depot stores are a short walk from a C-Train station.

Right, but if the point was to show what the biking infrastructure is like in each city, why would you deliberately avoid the available biking infrastructure?

Maybe they were just scared of Stanley Park Hill.

That and 5th st SW is the designated North south bike route which has speed bumps, numerous school zones, the odd 4 way stop to discourage traffic, a pedestrian button built out towards the bikes at 50 ave, and a bike signal just north of chinook.

He took a bad route.
