Rafikov has another contract extended in the KHL, not that it matters

Interestingly, Nikolayev has moved from the VHL to the Belarussian league for 2021-22

I assume this is a downgrade in competition, or at most a lateral move. If the Flames want him to develop, it might be more prudent to see if he will go to Stockton.

The Flames must have rightfully disagreed with Nikolayev's decision to sign in the Belarussian league. Looks like he's coming over to North America for 2021-22. Specific league and team is TBD

This is really good news, as he's a very underrated prospect.

5 goals 11 assists in 15 games for Nikolayev in the USHL.

Not that outstanding considering he is 20 now.

I wonder why he never played for Stockton?

In his defense, a few points to consider:

-Nik has been talked about as a guy who pays attention to the defensive side of the puck. His +/- of 10 is 11th in the USHL. He's billed as a Frolik type-good overall 200-ft game.

-His PPG of 1.07 is 25th in a league that's considered hard to score in (20th for players who have played 10 games or more). Adam Fantilli, the league's top scorer, has 30pts in 21 games for a PPG of 1.43.

-his 25 PIM is 7th most of players in the top-40. (doesn't mean much, just found it interesting)

-He looked very good in the prospects games earlier this year.

-I think he started slowly in the USHL, and has picked up steam? I could be wrong....

Don't get me wrong-like most prospects, he's a longshot to make it, but I think he's doing ok for a player of his ilk. There's always an adjustment period for players who have played on the larger ice their entire life.

Zavgorodniy has 3 assists in 10 games for HK Sochi in the KHL. He's actually tied for 24th amongst players 21 and under, 18th in pts/gp.

Rodion Amirov, who is one year younger, also has 3pts in 10 KHL games.

Nikolaev is a PPG now. 27p in 27 gp. Also a plus 14. And 27 PIM. I wonder if he trends upwards to around 1.5ppg after all is said and done this year.
