Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2020 - Round 9
It's time for the 8th annual Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking, but at a different time of year and certainly at a different time.
First a look back at previous years can be done with this handy link: Previous Results
Once again vote how you want. There are those that vote 100% on potential, some that vote 100% on the likelihood to see an NHL rink, others that apply a mix, some using the value in a trade. Completely up to you.
I'll run one a day until we are done, and then FlamesAddiction wants to do a one off list version to compare the results.
We start with 35 names so this should get us pretty close to a Flames camp.
2020 Results
1. Valimaki - 85%
2. Zary - 62%
3. Pelletier - 74%
4. Wolf (Run Off)
5. Mackey (Run Off)
6. Pettersen 42%
7. Phillips 36%
8. Gawdin 28%

You guys sold me on Kinnvall. Early into his season but he’s on pace for an NHLE of 68 points as a d man.

Poirier again. Listening to Button talk about him and his potential has sold me on him. Probably had the 2nd best pucks skills for a Dmen after Drysdale. His flaw is away from the puck, but as Button said, if he is committed to play in the NHL, he will work on his game. If he brings it together he will be a homerun.

Voted for Kinnvall here as he seems to be doing really well in the SHL and is showing progression year to year, at least offensively. Just turned 23 in July too so his offensive numbers in the league are very impressive. Might be a sneaky good pickup for the Flames.
I'm struggling to vote for Poirier after watching a bunch of draft videos on him. Great value in the 3rd round and all the upside in the world, but gosh, he needs a lot of work in his own end. The main concern I have with him is that on many of the plays that he makes mistakes on, it's not because of a lack of talent, it's because a lack of effort. Really tough to gauge where he is on my list.

Poirier still. Also giving consideration to Parsons, Kinnvall, Kuznetsov and Zav.
Don't agree with how high Gawdin was ranked, but that's just my opinion.

I'll be voting Ruzicka for a while. He's really big. Flames invited him to bubble camp. He's getting lots of praise from the AHL coaching staff on development curve. I'm hopeful for him.

Love that it's 8 deep and there are still intriguing guys on the board.
The recent picks from a Flames draft that many seem to like have that new toy thing for sure ... have to see where they are in a year etc.
Jake Boltman
Daniil Chechelev
Ryan Francis
Rory Kerins
Yan Kuznetsov
Illay Solovyov
But those players aside Calgary has another four guys that have a skill set that makes them damn interesting.
Johannes Kinnvall
Jeremie Poirier
Dmitri Zavagorodny
Tyler Parsons
And then yet another group that is developing pretty well since being taken/acquired ...
Illya Nikolayev
Josh Nodler
Adam Ruzicka
Carl-Johan Lerby
This looks like one of those years where we look back in a few and the guy ranked 13th to 15th is on the team.

Seeing as how it looks like he might win this round, his name should be spelled correctly. It's Dmitry Zavgorodniy.

After Zavgorodniy (who I have fifth), next on my list still available are Poirier (eighth) and Kuznetsov (ninth).

Spelling above matches both Cap Friendly and Elite Prospects but not hockeydb nor nhl.com or dobber.
Crazy!
I'll go with the NHL spelling and change it
My list was a scrape of the system and reserve list from Cap Friendly.

I went with Kuznetsov
Kuznetsov was the youngest player in NCAA Division 1 hockey last season, 11 points (2g/9a) in 34 games at UConn as a 17-year-old. They play in Hockey East (tough division) as a relatively modest team. Second on the team in D points, and a massive jump in production from his USHL numbers (5 points in a lot more games).
His skating isn't a weakness, he's one of the best defensive players in the NCAA (from an article in the draft thread) as the youngest player. The massive leap in production combined with his defensive abilities while being young for the league gives him good upside and a high floor.

I went Poirier, but definitely see the case for Zavgorodniy, Kuznetsov, Kinnvall, heck even Chechelev (or Checheev - remove the "L" as the dude hates to lose - borrowed from Twitter).
Great sign, as Bingo notes above, the depth of prospects in the organization, with a healthy injection of young-ish guys already on the roster.
This is the way.

Why not for Gawdin, outside of Valimaki he could be the most NHL ready prospect and was near pt/gm in the A last season. His ceiling is low but he has ticked all the boxes he possibly can at this point.
