Ya, the side streets, which are 3/4 of my route, were really tough. I fear it will last all week, as it won't be warm enough to melt, or cold enough to freeze. I ended up taking a few sidewalk sections. I think my legs are going to be tired by Friday.

Pathway portions of my ride were pretty sweet. A bit of an icy deathtrap along the path west of Deerfoot along 32nd. My handlebars may have a dent in them from the death griP I had in that area. The toughest part to ride was my own street (as usual).

Connections to pathways are a nightmare. Really don't understand how the city will clear a pathway, and then constantly miss the link that you have to ride to get on/off of it. It's usually like 5 seconds of shovelling or sweeping that gets missed out on every single time.
(and then people submit a 311 report and they send the contractors out again, how is this a good use of snow clearing budget?)

I like it when they plow the roads, and then leave a 2 foot ridge between that and the pedestrian crossing, then just leave it until a chinook rolls through. They do it at the Memorial and 7th st crossing all the time, some days people have to hurdle jump over it it is so high. And forget riding it, so you better be on the ball for the 15 seconds you have to cross 2 snow mounds and 2 lanes of traffic. But hey, at least the cars don't have to worry about snow in their lane!

back when I used to take the bus, I watched some poor soul with a walker try to go over one of those stupid snowbanks.

over the weekend i finally pulled the trigger on a set of studded tires for my fat bike - makes me very queasy when i think of how much i just spent on bike tires. thankfully my guy at the bike shop gave me a better than expected discount
installed post ride yesterday afternoon, so i am somewhat anxious to test em out

They usually end up with a tire-width cut through them that you have to hit just right and hope you don't wipe out. It's the ultimate "desire line" and yet somehow it's always the same areas that are a problem. Some clever frostbiker needs to come up with a way to automate 311 requests....

Just got back from a 15k ride around the hood to test out the new studded tires, and my verdict is, I could not tell a difference mostly beacause most of the path around the hood was bare.
Will got for a 30k spin after work tomorrow that will involve more snow.

IF you can find some.
What a slop fest this morning. I've gotta fender up this rig, I'm a mess once again. My old crappy shoe covers sure do their job well, tho. My feet are bone dry.

Fenders are a requirement on days like today. Hopefully the side streets melt to bare ground, or it is gonna be slick when this freezes up. It's not looking promising for the luge run down the bluff...

Also, the 10th street bike lane was a disaster yesterday, north of 13th ave. Good thing the city follows their 7 day plan, it should have been done on day 2. 311'ed it.

Also, day 3....

I ran into a couple of impassible pathways on my way home tonight.
- Canal path. Wasn't too bad coming off the 50th ave bridge and heading south. Tough going but doable. However after going under the tracks and swinging east it was just too thick. Had to turn around.
- Douglasdale along the river from the ball diamonds heading south. Had to pull out Google maps to show me how to get back onto the main road.

So, I'm heading to Bogota on Monday with the intention of cycling as much of South America as possible over the next year.
I'll be posting updates to this site if anyone wants to follow along.
See ya in a year!

Cycling around Bogota is surprisingly awesome. Biking around the hills of the coffee regions in Colombia is also fantastic. Enjoy your trip

Waiting to see that GPS link update!
A few years back when we were in Panama City there were two guys at our hostel that were bikepacking from the US and hoping to get all the way down to Ushuaia. They weren't sure if they left themselves enough time to do it, hope you can make it all the way down there. It's a pretty cool spot and definitely feels like the end of the world.

Arrived in Bogota last night. I updated our GPS location, hope that works. We're hanging out here until Sunday and then the bike adventure starts so probably won't see any more gps updates till then, but i will probably write a blog post in the meantime!
Everything arrived in what seems one piece. Haven't built the bikes yet, so hopefully nothing is damaged or missing!
