Thanks to the random stranger who helped me figure out how to change a flat along the canal path today. I think he said his name was Gary. Neither of us had ever done it before- but between the two of us and a little YouTube we got it done.

Had to ride home with no rear brakes though- can figure out how those go back together. Quick release is not so quick to go back.

And a special thanks to Ktrain who insisted I have a spare tube last months for our Chestermere ride. Otherwise I would have been walking the bike in shame.

Honest question... are tubeless rims/tires a thing in the roadie world at all? Made the switch 3 years ago and haven't had to deal with a flat since.

Not really. Schwalbe is making road tubeless tires, Continental is not. I think the issue has to do with the higher pressures that road tires run at. A 2.2" MTB tire runs at 20 or 30 PSI while a 23mm road tire runs at 100 PSI.

I would say a vast majority of roadies are still using tubes. I really want to make the switch to tubeless but requires a bit of an investment on the consumer side at the moment. A bit harder to find rims and tires that are compatible than in the MTB world where that stuff is everywhere.

Depends on your weight. You should have 15% squish in yout tire for otimal performance. We have a chart at work that is weight / width of tireand rim combo/ tpi for perfect air pressure based on rider.

100 psi is still pretty low as alot of non tubular tires frequently have max pressure for 120 -140 psi. .

Yhen not only does tpi play in pressure but rather or not you have tan side walls. Tan sidewalls have more play than a black wall so you can run pressure a tad hiber .

Its a science.

Yeah, having the right PSI might have saved me yesterday. The day before when I checked my pressure I was down to about 55 pounds. 65 is about ideal, and my tires recommend 60-85. I put them both up to 75. I blew the tire hitting one of the stupid roots on that canal pathway, and if I had a lower pressure it may not have blown.

I'm a bigger guy, so finding that sweet spot would be helpful. I love how much easier it is to pedal when I'm at higher pressure.

You may have bent your rim if the pressure was lower, I find I'm much less likely to get a flat with more air. I'm a big guy too and like to ride near max PSI on the commuter. Ya, it's a bit rougher, but overall faster and easier on roads/paths.

i am 260 or so on a good day and i run 85 to 90 psi in my commuter and about 45 in my mtn bike tire and somewhere around 8 in my fat bike.

i hate the feeling of tires at lower pressure, they feel like they are squirming and i hate when you go over soemthing and you can feel the rim strike.

it has been about 2 or three years since i last had a flat while commuting

On my road bike I got my first flat a few weeks back after putting ~5400km on those tires. Pretty good run I figure!

Speaking of flats, you haven’t had pucker factor until you have a blowout on a 700x25C front tire during a hot 60 km/h descent...

That sounds terrifying. I got a speed wobble doing 50, accelerating to 70 and that scared the garbage outa me. I legit thought I'd be a skipping stone on the pavement.

Hmm, over two years of using Strava on my iPhone and no issues. Now in the last two weeks I've had two rides do the auto-pause screw up on me (both my morning rides). Not a huge deal as since I'm on my same route I can manually enter my distance and time but annoying.

I did not, but yesterday CP decided to park a train across the Fox hollow crossing. That was annoying.

I was thinking on the ride in this morning that next week will be time to slip on the toe covers and perhaps reach for the ear protection as it was cool at 6.15.

also is cool out at lunch, I am thinking it may be the first fall ride home with leggings on.
