The first title of the year by a Canadian goes to Gaby Dabrowski in women's doubles:

http://www.tenniscanada.com/dabrowsk...-sydney-title/

That's some nice momentum for her going into the AO.

By "big hockey game" do you mean Bambi on ice? Haha!

Any chance to toot the horns of the Canadian tennis players, though, that's what I want to do...so toot toot!

Wawrinka could do this. His fitness is always in question and this year they are actually saying he is noticeably out of shape on top of his knee and shoulder issues.

Peter Polansky and Vasek Pospisil are in the final round of qualification for the Aussie Open. Polansky faces Yuki Bhambri who eliminated Brayden Schnur while Pops takes on
Ramkumar Ramanathan (this would have likely been a Davis Cup match in Edmonton last fall but Vasek couldn't go because of a bad back).

One up and one down - Polansky lost to Bhambri, but Vasek is in the Aussie Open main draw with a 6-4 4-6 6-4 win over Ramanathan.

Update: Peter Polansky gets in the men's draw as a lucky loser.

Tennis Canada‏@TennisCanada
There will be 5 Canadians in the #AusOpen singles main draws after Pospisil qualifies & Polansky gets in as a lucky loser. Vasek vs Cilic and Peter vs. Khachanov in the first round. #CdnTennis

The BEST news is that Tomic failed to qualify.
http://www.news.com.au/sport/tennis/...56b2d8754a3e38

First, how does he not get a wildcard?
Second, he hasn't changed

Quote:
Drained after the taxing loss, Tomic sarcastically responded to journalists asking him where he’d go from the loss.
“I just count money, that’s all I do. I count my millions,” he said.
“You go do what I did (on court). Bye bye.”

What "millions"? He's at about 5M in career earnings, most of which was a long time ago when he still had potential. No sponsorships anymore and he's been an extravagant spender with a bunch of sports cars, etc.

I laugh at how irrelevant he's become, but at the same time feel just a tiny bit bad about it, cause mental illness is not supposed to be funny.

Any Aussie Open predictions? I know we posted some earlier, but with injuries and what not, some things have changed.

I'm going to go crazy and pick A. Zverev and Sharapova....because, why not?

I'll stick with Joker on the men's side, on the ladies, give me Muguruza.

Sloane Stephens just crashed out of the Aussie Open. Stephens was serving for the match in set 2 up 5-4 and lost that set in a tie-breaker, then got demolished in the third set 6-2.

/I think she's lost eight consecutive matches since winning the US Open last summer.

Tomic is a tool and the open will be better without him. There was no wildcard offered because he has been struggling lately and refused to play in the wildcard playoff.

There are rumours he has accepted a million dollars to appear on the Australian version of "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here". It shows a lot about his character that he would rather make money being on a cheesy reality show than by putting in the work to make money from tennis.
