These are the only ads.
They are 60% of a timeline.
It sucks.

I find that pretty hard to believe... unless they fired anyone who knew what microservices did what but not the guy that could just mess with them.

I’m specifically talking about the promoted tweets. If you could get rid of those with an ad blocker, that would be amazing. I hate them. That’s what I’d pay to get rid of.
And yes, you can scroll past them. I’d just rather not see them to being with.

I'm not talking about promoted tweets where someone pays to be in your timeline; those are removed by adblockers. I mean when someone with a lot of followers gets paid to mention a product in a normal tweet and it's not even transparently advertising. Obviously an adblocker can't block that, but neither will paying for Twitter.

In a browser, yes. It wouldn't work in the mobile app (though there may be a way to achieve that), but adblockers remove all promoted tweets if you're viewing in a browser.

I've actually got a Youtube extension, Sponsorblock, that blocks out all the BS paid product crap in YouTube videos. Works really well.

I wouldn't ever think of trying to defend Musk but in this case, it's a 100% private company and while the behavior is reckless and lacking in empathy, he has every right to fire anybody who he doesn't want on his payroll.
The expectation of free speech is in the public sphere. In private, it's simply playing job-roulette to assume you can talk about anything on company channels.
That said, the brain-drain and follow-up reputation drain (who wants to work for Twitter after this?) is just going to further burning Twitter to the ground.

With all the fired experts, they'll be able to launch a Twitter competitor soon, free of the legacy code. I do wonder if Jack Dorsey is considering it.
Quote:
“The biggest issue and my biggest regret is that it became a company,” Dorsey tweeted.
If you’ve not heard Dorsey on one before, the idea that Twitter should never have been a company might sound strange. But he doesn’t really mean that the project should have never existed, more that if he could rewrite history he would have (supposedly) steered Twitter toward being a protocol, not a company. “[I] don’t believe any individual or institutions should own social media, or more generally media companies,” Dorsey tweeted back in April. “It should be an open and verifiable protocol. Everything is a step toward that.”

Great chance for a do-over. But then I just found this, which he might be regretting soon. Should have taken Musk's money!
Quote:
Dorsey rolled over his more than 18 million shares in Twitter (a roughly 2.4% stake) into the new Musk-owned company as an equity investor, rather than receiving a cash payout, according to a Thursday securities filing.

Why would any talented individual aspire to work in one of Elon's companies? The man is a tyrant.

For an interesting parallel, when Steve Jobs came back to Apple he was famous for making people nervous for getting into an elevator with him because he would ask what they were doing and if he wasn't satisfied they might be fired by the time they got off.
Steve Jobs did a similar house cleaning of Apple but it took him at least 2 years and not 2 weeks.
