Its actually a good thing it took so long.

You were loyal, perhaps to a fault.

If loyalty is your worst quality your doing fine. It keeps bridges standing that you may use again in the future.

But in this situation, I think your loyalty wasn't earned by your old coworker, and you acted accordingly. Nice job, and good luck in your new role. Sounds like you will kill it.
