Admittedly high on Pettersen. Think he might be another shocker of a prospect.

If it was ranking on who would be most likely an NHL regular 100GP, Zary would be 2 on my list

To clarify, I don't think the concern is about his foot speed. In fact his speed, acceleration, and edgework are all seen as strengths. It's the efficiency of his stride that is questioned from what I've seen.

Skating
Zary is a good skater, if somewhat unconventional. His stride can be a bit short and choppy at times, but this doesn’t seem to take away from his speed. He is still above average in terms of his top-end speed and he reaches that quickly with good acceleration. Zary also has very good agility and edgework. This helps him to get around defenders, both with and without the puck. Strong backwards skating also helps him to play a 200-foot game. Zary has a strong stride, that helps him to fight through checks and get to the dirty areas of the ice. It also helps him to work along the boards. If he can improve his lower body strength, this will improve even more going forward.

It's the danger of various reports simply stating his skating is a concern, because there are so many aspects within that broad category he then gets considered to be bad at everything.

Yes, I read that breakdown after posting my comment.

I’m also very high on Emilio so I can understand it in some ways.

I just want to believe we nailed the 2020 draft.

Zary, Poirier and Francis all seem like home runs in terms of value and potential.

Excited about Pettersen as well could be a nice late gem. Flames drafting has gotten so much better since Sutter.

Oh i believe the Flames did and Trees work on moving down to get poirier and boltman for free while still getting who they would have taken at 19 was genius. Always love getting free darts if possible. In my mind, those picks helped erase the deficit that the elliott and smith acquisitions caused.

I personally think Zary’s PPG in his draft year in the WHL suggest plenty of upside. Pronman wrote the following about Zary:

“Zary is a very entertaining player, as he’s one of the most skilled players in the draft. His touches with the puck are very quick, he’s extremely creative and he can beat defenders clean consistently. He had numerous moments this past season where he pulled off a highlight real-caliber play. Zary is a very smart offensive player. He can make the seam passes and find teammates very well, but also makes plays happen through unconventional ways.”

I agree that MEP looks like he could be another late round gem.

That is a fair point. I might have been lazy with my word choice. Again, I know nothing beyond scouting reports, so this is what Pronman ( who loves Zary) had to say before the draft

The major knock on Zary is his skating. Some scouts think it’ll be pro average, some think below-average. I lean to the former camp. It’s not great, and the stride breaks down at times, but I think the stride is good enough that he’ll be able to skate at the NHL pace.

FWIW Pronman has Zary ranked ahead of Pelletier and Valimaki, and he is a guy to definitely loves a prospect who skates well.

Hard not to be impressed by Zary numbers last year in Kamloops. Zary putting up those numbers in the WHL, being bigger and playing center puts him ahead of Pelletier.

That 2018 draft was solely saved because of our 6th and 7th round picks - Mathias Emilio Pettersen & Zavgorodniy.

• Hamonic trade cost us round 1 & 2 picks
• Smith trade cost us us round 3 pick
• Stone re-signing cost us round 5 pick

We drafted three other guys in the 4th round that aren’t trending as well as the guys picked after them (Pospisil, Koumontzis and Roman).

Pelletier for me, still hoping to see a Brad Marchand light except with less annoyance but in terms of style. If he did ever get that annoyance part of the game I would be super excited, but I don’t think you win a sportsmanship award and have that gem hidden.

He probably has the best chance out of the 3. He’s a bigger guy and put up 10points in 26 games late year in Stockton.

Not bad, especially considering the intangibles he provides.

Pospisil has a chance. Hard player to project including because of his erratic behavior at times, on the ice. But he seems to be a guy that has an impact on the game in some way.
Of course I've thought that about similar guys that have come through like JD Watt and they went nowhere.

Going off Instagram, I think Lerby is in Calgary alongside Andersson, Lucic and Dube (and Gio). They’ve been doing these VR games, and Andersson has Lerby listed as one of the guys there. Looking at Lerby’s instagram, looks like he flew here back in September.

Pelletier for me, ive been lucky enough to watch him here in Moncton, until the trade that occurred after the season cancelled.
The kid was poised to lead them to through the Q and onto the memorial cup before the shut down
