Google issued a semi-formal statement today to address this. They didn't confirm or deny it, but did leave a bit of a question mark in the air I suppose.

This whole thing smells fishy to me. Something isn't adding up somewhere. If all this is supposedly about security, then why are they commenting specifically about efficiency now?
Would it be more efficient to have your services hacked by external people and having to devote resources to combat this, or to not?

Efficiency is just PR blanket buzzword for everything to avoid naming the issue directly. Less security risks = more efficient.

I love when Google tilts at windmills. Search! no, need email too! no, no, need social networking...need a browser! and an OS! maybe three! (Chrome OS, Android, Goobuntu)...WE NEED TO BE A POWER COMPANY! Oh and fibre to towns! And a cell phone...of our own! Wait, who forgot about TV! Yes, a set top box!

Hey Google - how bout you clean up all those SEO cheaters on the front page of your search results that offer zero value to the internet at large, and worry about the other poop later.

Haha, nice. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one that noticed Google's declining search results reliability...

Forget not from whence we came, indeed.

everyone's figured out how their algorithm works in a way and abuses it, or they are trying to make more money off adsense. search for anything on health and 99% of hits are to places trying to sell you something. It's stuff like that that makes me agree with that crazy NYTimes columnist writing about how horrible a place the internet is. Most of us savvy generation will know by instinct what is bogus and what is not by a brief glance but my grandparents have the hardest time trying to look up information on their health issues.

Yeah, my father pretty much clicks on the first thing he sees without even reading it. Drives me nuts when I'm watching him.
