Peewee hockey is no more
https://twitter.com/ericfrancis/stat...366156800?s=21
Hockey Canada announces starting next season it will scrap novice, atom, peewee, bantam & midget hockey. To simplify and be more inclusive, the new age-division names are Under-7, U-9, U-11, U-13, U-15, U-19* and U-21.
https://twitter.com/mattpisko/status...233945602?s=21
So really, there is no difference, other than naming.
U7 = Timbits
U9 = Novice
U11 = Atom
U13 = PeeWee
U15 = Bantam
U19*= Midget
U21 = Junior
*Appears to be a typo in the original reply tweet. Hockey Canada has Midget as U18

Meh, this has no affect on anything.
Kids will still play hockey and have fun.
FYI, lacrosse has also done this as well.

"To be more inclusive".
Just admit that you caved over complaints from people who think the word "midget" can have only one meaning and using it in any other context is offensive.
Saw the same nonsense in baseball where people whined about how offensive "Disabled List" was.

Looks like a typo in calculoso's post. Hockey Canada calls it U-18: https://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/ho...sions/under-18

Think they could have made it up to U-18 and moved the U-19 up with the U-21
Edit. Should read all posts first

Does this mean a 12 year old could jump at play at the U15 if they wanted at a double AA or even community level? or are they still restricted?

The name is changed, that's it, there is no other changes (at least that is what I have been told)

I think it makes sense from a simplicity perspective - these names make more sense than Atom, or Tyke to somebody who is not familiar with the hockey program.

Ironically I think this is more of a 'Don Cherry' kind of thing.
Having age groups delineated by....well...age, actually makes a lot of sense.
Having some name for it that people are supposed to know is attributed to a certain age is kind of esoteric.
Label the age group as the age group and move along regardless of 'how its always been.'

There is no downside to this move. None. It's more inclusive and easier to understand.

I wonder what the topic will be on Don Cherry's first pod cast.

Yeah, we changed Midget football to Spring Football a couple of years back.
Bantam and Peewee and Atom stayed the same.

Thanks to this name change, I can finally remember what I played. I could have looked it up, but seeing the U# classification next to the old names, I can figure out what I played.
It really does simplify the divisions and what age plays what.

Surprised it took so long. Those names made no sense.

My kids all ski race and they use the U-8, U-10 etc. Way easier to figure out and took me all of 2 minutes to get used to it. “Controversial” names aside, it’s a better system.
