Feels like a pick where you overthought it and talked yourself into believing he was good and could risk losing him.
Considering most scouting services didn’t even have a profile for him, and since he was an overage, my gut is he would have been there in round 7.

Goalies were a crapshoot this year. Hlavag didn't even get drafted, unless I missed it, and most people had him going in the third round. There's probably at least a dozen players who should have been picked before the ones who were and vice versa.
When Tre says that they spent months going over footage, that makes me feel better about the pick, because I'm sure Calgary does more research than the majority of teams in the league, and this particular draft should benefit from that attention to detail.

I am so late to this party but uhhhh. Lemme just catch my breath here..
Hooooo doggy what a wild card!!!
Okay okay. Bear with me here.
1. Right catching goalie
2. Quick but not Wolf quick
3. Reactive like a certain goalie from Finland we know and cherish.
4. This is gonna sound crazy but I see so much Ed Belfour in him. The ultra wide Butterfly, the low hunch. The aggression. Oh. Emm. Gee.
Insert excitement .gif here.
Odds are he likely won't pan out but what a gamble. What a gamble. Exciting AF gamble.

Rinne was drafted in the 8th round in his 4th year of eligibility. He turned out okay.

Basically, goalies are so weird that as long as it's not a first rounder, I don't mind grabbing them.
I like this pick. I don't love it, but I have no reason to dislike it either

His contract is up in Russia after this season. Wonder if they can convince him to come over then.

Russian tandem in the AHL, I like it.

I don't think it's rare that overagers fly under the radar of scouting services.
There's a good chance the Flames knew there was someone else interested. After all, it only takes one other team to notice the same kid.

It's also possible the Flames had a few goalies they were interested in, who had already gotten picked, so they didn't want to risk losing this guy as well.

Considering Nico Daws was taken between the Boltmann and Chechelev pick, that wouldn't be a bad assumption.

If you look at the list of top goalies right now, they came from almost every draft round, so who the hell knows with goalies.

I think the Flames wanted a European goalie as it allows for greater flexibility in terms of development.
If they draft a CHL goalie, you have to find a spot for them on your ECHL, AHL, or NHL team within 2 years. With Parsons and Wolf in the system already, adding another CHL goalie might be cannibalizing each others ice time.
With Euro goalie, you can leave them there for a while and also have someone else, maybe someone better, develop them for you.

No idea about this guy, but if they really like him, glad they picked him when they did. Similar to Boltmann, they don't need to try and sneak out another round to see if he lasts. If he is on their board next, go get him.

A hard lesson to learn, after missing out on Kucherov.

I think losing out of drafting Kucherov spooked the Flames a little to not gamble too hard on prospects they think other teams might be overlooking. They had him on their list, but gambled that he would fall another round.
I would not be surprised if they knew another team had Chechelev on their list and didn't want to push it to far.
