Sounds like Connor Brown is going in "high". I like the player, but not in the same league as, say, Lindholm.

The #leafs avoid salary arbitration with Ilya Mikheyev. His two-year extension comes with a $1.645M AAV.

I think it's plausible that the Senators will not be last place next year.
I like their roster better than Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim

Well, Detroit was worse than Ottawa last year, and I think that may still be the case. Otherwise, I still see Ottawa as pretty awful. If Murray bounces back, then maybe, but I would think San Jose and Anaheim would better.
Future may be brighter, but right now? Blech.

That’s pretty close, I definitely see them getting a contract done before arbitration

Seems like a lot for Bertuzzi. IMO he is no better than Mangiapane (might actually be worse), but he got to take advantage of a piss poor roster in Detroit to get plenty of ice time.

How many of the 26 players haven’t signed yet? It seems like a lot have. Might only see a handful actually go to arb.

So far 11 of the 26 players who filed for arbitration have signed.
We might not see anyone go to arb. The previous rules allowed for both parties to reach an agreement even after the hearing had ended and before the arbitrator announced an award. Now, the new CBA states that as soon as the hearing starts, both sides can't negotiate anymore which makes the hearing a hard deadline.

That's how it is every year.
Last year, 33 cases were settled before the hearing, 2 were settled after the hearing but before the arbitrator ruled (which is no longer allowed), and 6 went to the arbitrator's ruling.
6 cases actually going to the arbitrator's decision was the highest number in at least a decade. In 2016, none of the cases actually made it to the arbitrator's ruling, and only one went to the hearing.
No one actually wants to go to the hearing. They tend to create bad blood and it isn't uncommon for the player to be traded before the arbitrated contract is over.
In recent years, the Flames have only had two cases reach the hearing: Bouma signed a 3-year deal after his hearing but before the ruling -- and it was bought out after 2 seasons; Kulak was awarded a one-year deal by the arbitrator and he was traded to Montreal before he played a single regular season game on the new contract.

If I'm not mistaken, San Jose will still be paying all of Couture, Burns, Karlsson, and Vlassic in 5 years. Their average ages at that time will be around 37.5 years old. The four of them earn 35 million per season.
If you think their situation is bad now, wait a couple years and see.

We have our first hearing:
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Told no settlement between DET and Tyler Bertuzzi. As per new rules, there cannot be one after the hearing begins.

Sabres announce they’ve signed Linus Ullmark to a one-year $2.6 million contract. They’ll avoid arbitration which was scheduled for tomorrow.
