3) Too tight to deadline - end up in a time crunch and have to take what you can
I don't see Conroy in the 1st camp at all (think Feaster may have been). The 2nd and 3rd issues though remain to be seen. Fine line between being firm and getting a good deal and pushing too hard and losing the bid.

No question. But that is why I like that he is doing the legwork now. If you push hard at the last second, you run the risk of losing out. But he is finding out early what the elasticity of the market is, so I am very confident he won't get caught.

Yeah. It's not the return I'd be thrilled with or tout a home run, but would accept (because it likely implies the market wasn't ideal).

Minimums?
Tanev: 2nd round pick.
Hanifin: 1st round pick, B level prospect
Markstrom: one A level prospect or two B level prospects
Expected:
Tanev: 2nd round pick plus a B level prospect
Hanifin: 1st round pick, B level prospect, cap dump, plus a mid-round pick
Markstrom: No trade

Tanev: The best offer on the table at the deadline
Hanifin: The best offer on the table at the deadline
Markstrom: 5 first round picks or Mercer, Holtz, Nemec, Casey and a 1st.

Not sure what Tanev goes for, but out of the playoff rentals that we have and on other teams, I can't think of a player that would move the needle more for a team. Seems like the most plug and play addition.

We have seen these before in flames GMs so I get the concern. And you’re right that we will see in the next 2 weeks if Conroy can avoid falling into these categories. I do have faith in how he’s handling it so far. Sounds like he has set a price and is waiting for teams to step up and pay the price and the rumoured asks are not unreasonable… much worse players then tanev have returned first round picks at recent trade deadlines. Conroy has the advantage of setting the market price by having the 3 top trade targets in the league right now. All the other sellers this year have lesser players to offer and they don’t want to blink and sell their player for less than they could potentially get either. As a few NHL insiders have said… teams are waiting for Tanev/Hanifin/Markstrom to set the market before other teams start making their trades.

97% of making good trades is just having leverage. The other 3% is negotiating.
When Florida traded for Tkachuk with us - from what we know now - they overbid the market by a large amount and should have really offered less. But it still goes down as a win for them because Tkachuk wanted to go there and they paid the price.
From the Calgary side - it was the same situation as Iginla. They had a very good player - but he wanted out and would only go to a limited amount of teams - so they next to no leverage.

Tanev: 2nd (though I think it's silly that teams won't cough up a 1st. Tanev is precisely the type of guy that can turn a team on the edge into a contender)
Hanifin: 1st/B+ prospect + B- prospect. Or young roster player + C prospect/mid pick
Markstrom: Hard to say as there are 2 pieces. The player and the retention.

This is what I worry about. However, willing to give Conroy the benefit and hopefully it will all work out.

There's still a decent window for trades to be worked out without a time crunch factoring in.
I think we see the two expected trades happen in the week leading up to TDL day, but not in the 11th hour. I could see something unexpected or out of left field coming down the day of. But I think business gets taken care of before then.

He didn't get too cute with the other UFAs so I am not worried.

I wouldn't be happy with just a 2nd for Tanev. If it's not a 1st (it should be though), I think there needs to be another pick or prospect attached to the 2nd.

If they can't squeeze a 1st out of the bidders I could see a 2nd + 3rd package getting it done.
That's been a popular return for good but not great pieces in years past.

I believe in the Jays.

I'm going to stick to just talking about Tanev and Hanifin because Markstrom isn't a trade or lose situation and I'm assuming that this is as a pure rental (no sign and trade or extension in hand and no retention)...
Tanev: 2nd +
Hanifin: 1st +
I'm flexible on that the "+" are. I'd prefer quality Center & D-men prospects but I'll take additional/upgraded picks if need be.
If we're talking about retention/extensions being involved the I still want the same things I just want more/better of the same.
