(Dan) Ryder back on track
A little blurb from today's Times -
Quote:
“He’s getting better now,’’ said Pardy, who once dated Ryder’s sister. “There were a lot of personal issues going on there, a lot of things that needed to be taken care of before he could return.’’

Speaking to the person, good to hear he's getting things in order. As a hockey player and asset to the Calgary Flames, I find it difficult to sympathize. His career was his own to screw up, and he has.
I know I'll take flack for saying that.

Some things are more important than hockey. Hopefully he's on the road to being better.

If Ryder wasn't a hockey player and was, say, a mechanic, would people still be so hard on him for taking time off of his job to get his life straightened out?

I'm thinking that people get frustrated because other than boyd and backlund, the Flames have no other offensively talented prospects. If he was a player in the same mold as say nystrom or prust, I don't think people would be as frustrated.
Personally though, In this case I could care less about hockey. What matters is a persons ability to be happy. If this time off helped him become happy and allows him to play hockey again, that's great. If not, Oh well.

Well he is under contract - or to be more accurate - in breach of his contract with the Flames, which is why he's suspended. So basically until either he lives up to the terms of his contract (by playing) or the Flames choose to release him - they are his property.
This is good news though - both for him and the Flames. Course nothing is for sure, and we don't even know if the organization still has interest in giving him another chance or not.

You clearly have no idea about the Flames prospects. We have quite a few others than the 2 you listed that have offensive potential. I think you should actually look at some stats.
For example, Jusso Pusstinen doesnt have offensive upside? okay......

Well, the point is that the garage where the mechanic works doesn't rope off the bay and turns away business while he's off "finding himself." No matter how talented the guy is.
Until such time as Daniel Ryder exhibits 100 percent commitment (without hand holding), then writing him off as a prospect is what the Flames should rightfully do.

That's good to hear, especially for the kid's sake. As far as whether he's burned any bridges as a player or not, that's pretty hard to say without knowing the fine details. I assume Darryl knows the fine details so i'll trust whatever judgement he makes.
Drunk Skunk ... thanks for staying on top of details like this involving Flames prospects for us. I appreciate it greatly.

When I think of offensive potential, I think of possible first or second line players. Not guys who may chip in 10-15 goals.

Is that a three year contract, does this year count, so, at least another two years?
Almost sounds like he is ready to come back...

Jusso has the potential to be a 1st line player. Have you even read or seen him play?

I haven't seen much of jusso play, as I don't really follow the Juniors as much as I do the AHL or the european leagues. Even if he is as good as you say, that means that we only have 3 players with any offensive potential other than Ryder. Not exactly a lot.

I don't think it's any secret that the Flames lack a lot of truly high end skilled forwards in their prospect ranks. But say there are "only 3" is ignoring the the fact that any number of their prospects could develop into a skilled forward.
Hugo Carpentier has some upside.
As does John Armstrong
To name two.
Which isn't to say I'm an expert on either, or that I would bet the money on them turning into NHL scorers.
But that's the nature of the drafting game.
