Captain America has the strength to hold back Thanos for even a split second??? Something special better be going on there.
Clearly Thanos was humoring him so he wouldn't feel bad when he was left a smoking crater.
But then again we pretty much have to have a bit of a Thanos light here.
I mean part of this whole thing would normally be a group of avengers standing across from thanos and Iron man basically says
"Anyone without god like powers, please report to the back of the group, you are now stretcher bearers. That means you too Cap, you're a little faster and stronger then a normal person, but Thanos could byatchskap you through three dimensions."
"The rest of us will prepare to be stretchered out"

Movie Captain America is obviously way stronger than comic Captain America. The dude stopped a helicopter from taking off with his bare hands in Civil War...

I kind of always considered Cap's power to be his will, and that the harder he tries, the stronger he can possibly be. Making his strength sort of infinite in a way, just requiring a lot of effort and can only be held for very short lengths of time.
Because Im a dork, I've watched the Infinity War trailer many, many times.
The way its cut, I don't think those last two takes are the same scene. The one with Thanos leaping, then Cap holding his hand back. They just don't line up. I think its safe to say that if that punch was meant for Cap, he would be a ball of goo in a crater.
Its hard to handle power levels in these movies, Cap has gone up against Ultron, Loki, Tony. Yet mere mortal GSP gave him a challenge in Winter Soldier.
Thor is a god, yet Iron Man stood up to him.
I've always kinda thought there was an unknown to Caps strength, as alluded to above. That generally speaking he has superhuman strength , but his will has shown that he could elevate it further than the original creator of the serum thought possible. Perhaps that can explain some of it.
