a truly unique run:
2018 - missed WC
2020 - won Euros
2022 - missed WC
they haven't been in a WC knockout game since beating France in the Zidane/Materazzi final in 2006.

Yeah it’s weird.
Historically Italy was good at world cups and horrible in the Euro Cup.
Recent history has flipped and they are better in Euros and have just been trash in the World Cup and qualifying
Donnarumma needs to make that save today though…woof

Sweden scores a very pretty goal with 10 minutes left in extra time.

What is going to happen to the Ukraine-Scotland match?
I bet even Scotland fans cheer for Ukraine and wear yellow & blue.

For the Italians though they didn’t rotate their front 6 enough after winning Euros, and having Locatelli, Chiesa, Spinazzola, and Others hurt limited their chances to rotate.
After going undefeated for a record 37 matches and winning the Euro Cup…the recent form has been bad.
At that point they were 3-0 in qualifying and looked to be in great shape
Since then:
Drew Bulgaria
Drew Switzerland
Beat Lithuania
Lost to Spain
Beat Belgium (Mean nothing 3rd place game)
Drew Switzerland
Drew Northern Ireland
Lost to North Macedonia
Admittedly didn’t realize how poor they’ve been since Sept 2021. Knew they’ve been struggling to finish, but until you put it on paper you don’t realize the Euro hangover they had.
Peaked at the right time to win the Euros and then haven’t been able to find form since.

Look on the bright side...in these trying times of high oil prices, rampant plague, insurgencies and invasions, food scarcity and general malaise...you wont have to worry about Italy in Qatar.
Its a small blessing perhaps.
Besides, I'm willing to bet that the Qatar World Cup is going to be a clusterfata of absolutely EPIC proportions. It is going to be a gong-show for the Ages!
And the Italians will be sitting on a beach somewhere eminently grateful that they're playing no part in it.

The Qatar world cup will be excellent. First big event in the middle east they will pull out all the stops. And with Canada there, extra special.

The vuvuzela ruined the first WC in Africa.
Do Qataris have any annoying traditional instruments?

Nope. Just normal. They've been hosting the World Club Championship.
Also. This was Italy's first home world cup qualifying loss ever. 48 wins 11 draws.

I know many football fans, either in person or from online communication ... people from a lot of different countries. I can honestly say this is the first time I have read that sentence, ever. I have no idea how anybody could look forward to that travesty of a tournament, but alas, it is what it is.

The only potential upside I can see is that by having it mid-season the players will probably be in better form (aka mid-season form) than they would be at the end of the season when they are tired. Otherwise, I suspect it's gonna suck ass.

Wow, Italy being bounced from World Cup contention seem comparable to Canada being bounced from an Olympics hockey qualifier if that was a thing.

If you would have asked me last June “Italy will win the Euro but won’t qualify for the World Cup again, do you take that deal?”
I would have said yes every time.
Winning the trophy is always better than just qualifying. But doesn’t make it sting any less that this team went from looking unbeatable, to just having no confidence to finish overnight.
Mancini really didn’t alter the lineup well once Spinazzola was hurt, and the formation just didn’t work with Emerson and Florenzi as the wingbacks.
Probably should have tried to shift to a modified 3-5-2 instead to be honest.

Because in the end it's about football and the tournament. Will it be worse than South Africa? Vuvuzelas. Or Brazil? Playing in a jungle?
Qatar just hosted the Arab Cup a few month ago as a tuneup. 16 team tournament. No problems.

I’m pretty angry at their loss, but take solace in the fact I’ve been alive to witness a World Cup and Euro Cup championship. Those are extremely hard to win and only a tiny handful of countries have ever won them. This World Cup will be a #### show so I can relax and just watch an underdog Canada now.

I, for one, am proud that the Italian football federation has decided to boycott the World Cup due to Qatar’s atrocious human rights record.
Hopefully other countries will follow suit.

No it's not. Give your head a good long shake if you actually believe that.
If it was about football and the tournament it would never have been awarded there.
