Thing is, treliving probably had 15 other plans and ideas at the time..

Sounds plausible to me. I'm sure Treliving had various scenarios in play and this was one possibility of many depending on who teams ahead were picking. We should really thank the BJs for helping us dodge that bullet. Really, the outcome of that draft worked out perfectly for the Flames.

TBH though, if this deal was necessary in order to draft Matthew Tkachuk, I think I would've done it. Luckily, it wasn't necessary

This trade looks bad now because of how important Backlund has become to this team. But I don’t think in 2016 that he was such a well-known commodity. The Flames would have been bereft of scoring that year had this gone down, and there is a good chance that Tkachuk would have struggled that year.

That was right after his 21 goal, 46 point breakout season. He might not have been known to the public at large, but any competent team scouting department would have had a good idea. Fortunately, this is the Oilers scouting department we are talking about.

This is why we should never trade with the Oilers.

With Chia: "Trade is one for one."

So, Wideman for 4OA. We would have ended up with Backlund, Tkachuk (6OA) and 4OA.

I cant imagine if this went down differently and they ended up with Backlund and Keller or even PLL now that he is looking good. Chia might still be around and we might both be struggling for a wild card spot.

Based on Treliving's comments with the FAN960 immediately after he signed Backlund to the extension, I think this rumour is fake. He talked a lot about how teams win with two-way players like Backlund and even noted that without re-signing Backlund, the Flames did not have anyone ready to fill that hole.

He's always emphasized the importance of Backlund to the organization and I very much doubt his opinion changed in a year after being willing to trade him away to move up 2 spots in the draft.

Fake news!

Friedman on the 31 Thoughts Podcast from last season said this was the foundation of the rumoured three-way but didn't mention the other parts:
  • Flames move up to three where they would have taken Jesse Puljujarvi.
  • Blue Jackets drop to fourth where they would have taken Pierre-Luc Dubois.
  • Canucks still would have taken Olli Juolevi at five.
  • And the Oilers would have dropped to sixth and taken Mikhail Sergachev or Matthew Tkachuck...but Friedman believes it would have been Sergachev.

Imo if it is true backlund and wideman were being used in conjunction it is because the flames were considering selling high on backlund.

And Arizona would've had their choice of Tkachuk or Keller, while the remaining player would have been a big upgrade on Alex Nylander for Buffalo.

Edmonton could actually be a good team with Sergachev. He'd be the best Dman they've had since Pronger.

AZ would have taken Matt over Keller because of history (also draft rankings - Matt was like 7 spots higher for NA skaters).

No. "Significantly improved" is still a far sight from being "good" for that embarrassment of a team.

Cue "No one can help" meme and insert "Sergachev".

Imagine we gave up Backlund to move up to #3 and drafted Puljujarvi. That sets the organization back years and Treliving probably isnt the gm anymore. Shows the NHL is so much about luck. One move being the difference between a contender and mediocre team. That would basically be our whole second line gone.
