Lowes Opening 3 Stores in Calgary in 2010
Quote:
CALGARY - Lowe’s, the U.S. based home improvement chain, announced Monday it will open three stores in Calgary next year.
The company, which set up its first Canadian store in Toronto in 2007, will open locations at CrossIron Mills, just nort of the city, in McKenzie Town, in the city’s southeast and in Sundridge, in the northeast.
Lowe’s has said it plans to open as many as 45 stores in North America in 2010.

Great news for us DIY'ers!
While I get the McKenzie Town and Sunridge locations, why they hell would they put one of these in Mallzac? I just don't see people driving that far to get DIY items when there's a HD/Rona just around the corner already. Even the far NW closest to Mallzac is serviced by quite a few HD's already.

Airdrie already has a Home Depot and Totem, so that adds to the weirdness of the Mills location.

So Mckenzie Towne would be 130th Ave or South Trail / Shepard Regional Centre?

There's a Home Depot at Sarcee/Stoney and in Airdrie
There's a Rona at Beddington (symons Valley)/Stoney
Just filling in the holes. Lowes need a big chuck of open land, pieces liek that just aren't available everywhere.
It'll do just fine near Mallzac.

Doesn't Calgary have enough home improvement stores? Oh well I guess competition is good.

Never been to a Lowes, but is there something about Lowes that makes them better than Home Depot?

How about a hardware store that's actually organized in a logical fashion so I can actually find that one tiny part that I need instead of having to wander to a hundred departments and ask a dozen sales staff that don't know what they are doing?

Ugh, can we get a hardware store in the West side already? So many people and all we have is a mini-rona in Westhills or Totem way down in Bowness

I dealt with them a bit in Denver a couple of years ago. The difference between them and HD, besides colours, was the annoyance level of the employees. I only once evaded their help-offerings in about 30 visits.
They were on you immediately, offering to help. Not bad, if you need it...It would sometimes take me longer to politely refuse their assistance than it would to buy the tape measure or work light I was there for.
This can only be a good thing for consumers, as they had really competitive prices relative to the Orange box. I'm pretty sure they had Price Match as well.

ha... I know when you're in a rush this isn't practical, but I always view going to Home Depot as somewhat of a treasure hunt. I get to see how long it takes me and my man instincts to find what I'm looking for.
It leads to great deal of satisfaction when I find it. Of course, the sales people look at me funny when I growl at them to leave me alone.

Sales people who actually ask if you want any help???? Damn, if that's the only difference between Lowes and Home Depot, it's worth it. My biggest peeve with HD in Calgary is that there is never anyone around, and when there is, nobody knows what they are talking about so they just refer you to someone else in hopes of getting you off their back.

In the wake of the West's successful campaign for LRT service, you guys should next turn your attention to this blatant home improvement oversight.

Home Depot suuuucks. Especially the one on 16th ave NW... That HD has to be the worst hardware store I've ever shopped at. Whenever I need to go to a hardware store (which is almost daily) I always drive right past HD to the nearest Rona or Totem. Bring on Lowes.

As you point out, the Calgary / Airdrie market is well covered...so you're suggesting that the Mallzac location is going to cover the booming metropolis of Balzac and surrounding towns?
I sure don't see people from Calgary / Airdrie going there unless there's some screaming cut rate prices. As someone said, put one in the SW somewhere... underserviced market with a lot of opportunity.

Lowe's came to Wichita about 10 years ago and I haven't set foot in Home Depot by choice since. 20 X the store.

If only Rona in Westhills could somehow become bigger. That'd be very nice. In lieu of that, I propose that Rona buys the land where Ernest Manning HS is, let the city build their LRT stop underground, and then build a gigantic Rona to service west Calgary.
