Hey you can speak all the sense youíd like about this and youíre right on the nose with those thoughts but at the end of the day to lose a player of Johnnys calibre would be a mega blow to my fandom full stop. Would take a little bit for me to feel like watching hockey like a diehard fan as I have for decades because even through his struggles here Johnny was the main reason I was pulling up a seat to watchÖ this season he had was the biggest I told you so to all the leafs, oilers and nucks fans who called me crazy when I said Johnny would challenge Connor for a scoring title one year; to lose him right after a season like that is vomit inducing. Fingers firmly crossed heís staying but at this point Iíd be lying if I said I wasnít nervous heís set to jet.

I just want to point out, and not because I have an issue with you saying that, it makes sense to me. But, in the other thread, you just called out the GM for likely not doing a rebuild (which would make us very un competitive).

Then in this thread, you articulate that if we are un-competitive you'll likely have to find other things to do with your evenings (which as mentioned, I totally get and would also agree). This is why the Flames are likely hesitant to do a full rebuild. As much as we say we want it, the hit they will take to attendance and view ship over the years we are rebuilding and not competitive, even in a good hockey market is pretty hard to swallow.

Small market Canadian teams have great knowledgably core fan bases that likely can understand a rebuild, but they macro economics of a small Canadian market don't create the right environment for intentional sucking. They need to fill the building, which doesn't happen unless the team is competitive, and they really need that playoff revenue, even if it's just for one round.

My thought is that if Johnny leaves, the Flames go "all-in" on Tkachuk and double down on being a gritty, hard-to-play-against, defense-first team.

Re-sign the other RFAs and bring back Gudbranson. Try to shore up the Defense by adding some size and mobility (ie. upgrade Zadorov), and maybe bring in a middle-six PP specialist to replace some (not all) of Johnny's production.

Sounds simple I know, but I don't think the team would be as bad as people think. Especially if they can keep the GAA down like they did this year.

If the team starts a rebuild and we are not competitive we at least have a reason for hope and a future. Not to mention we get to see some young fresh prospects play.

Watching some over priced UFA players try and grab 8th in the west and have us drafting 14th or something is not something I'll put my time in to. We have seen way to much of this as flames fans.

Sure, it helps but we are talking about 70+ million dollars here. The flames donít care how itís structured to a degree. Thatís not going to make it break the signing

Players care about structure. They like up front money every year and bigger salaries at the front end. They can invest more, they can buy more sooner.

Like I said, the Flames probably are giving Johnny a ton of flexibility when it comes to signing bonus and structure. Itís not a make or break here

Oh just love hearing Pat talk about how close they were and how much cheaper it was going to be last summer.

Well, you do you.

I have been a fan of this team since they arrived in Calgary in 1989, and no single player is going to change that now. Life will go on and the Flames may be worse off for it if Gaudreau signs elsewhere. But all these things are cyclical, and hockey is fun.

GFG.

The earlier leaked information indicated that Gaudreau's agent pointed out that Johnny was relied on for all puck carrying into into zone and he had no support.

I think that's a major gap we need to fill with players on both top lines at a minimum.

I'd be happy with Zad + Gud back.
