That's not good. Some of the aftershocks have been pretty big.

Reuters upgraded it to a 7.9, doesn't seem like a lot but it's actually close to 1.5 times stronger, it was a shallow quake as well which makes things far worst.

Wow, this is insane. Absolutely horrific videos everyone line now. The death toll might easily been in the 10s of thousands. Turkey was apparently NOT ready for this at all, even though some scientists have been warning about this for a while.

Some terrible footage all over socials right now.

Videos and experiences from people around the region in this reddit thread. Apparently some people trapped under rubble are posting IG stories/videos to try and get help. Insanity and not what the world needs right now

Yeah this list has quite a few significant aftershocks. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthqua...6563&map=false

Unfortunately there was a 2nd earthquake that is registered to be 7.5 to 7.7 right as rescue efforts were underway with many more buildings coming down.

There's videos of streets of dozens of apartment complexes completely leveled to the ground, I would expect well over 100K casualties or way more. Really tragic.

My daughter is in Cyprus at the moment. Messaged us at dinner time last night which was unusual (3:30 am their time). Their hotel room was swaying and the doors sliding open/closed, she said it felt like she was on a boat at sea. No damage thankfully and nothing compared to Turkey and Syria but still an eye opener for all of us.

Or, crazy thought, they could send a delegation of aid workers and supports as a show of good faith in the hopes of patching up a difficult relationship? Nah you're right, I'm sure your way will work better.

Anyways, this situation is horrible. The moment the lights went out in that video farther up in this thread is just eerie.

We should update thread title to include Syria. Very sad. Those people have been through so much in the last few years.

That would make this the worst natural disaster since the Tsunami in 2004 I'm guessing? So sad.

Hard to even imagine how much power mother nature can unleash in so little time. It looks like some of the worst warzones after months of fighting in Ukraine.

I hope the casualties are minimal.
