Capitals extend Sonny Milano (3 years, $1.9 million AAV)

Would have been nice if he showed something in camp. Granted I’m not sure his game and Sutter would have mixed.

good for him to find a home. The chances of him doing that under Sutter were always slim, but he's an NHLer for sure and bagging a 3 year deal a few months after having to take a PTO has to feel good.

The Calgary Flames front office and coaching staff have to be some of the poorest at evaluating talent in the NHL. They had him right under their noses in pre season

Milano had a pretty bad preseason and probably didn't earn a contract based on his performance.
But the issue is, he did earn a contract based on his performance in 2021–22, which matters a heck of a lot more than some exhibition games. Particularly when the Flames made an inexplicable $2.6 million commitment to a substantially worse player in Kevin Rooney, who is now their AHL third-line centre.

Rooney was obviously a poor signing. Flames good for one or two of those a year.
But Milano had two decent NHL seasons that sandwiched a whole lot of nothing over three years. Zero reason to sign this guy to a three deal IMO. People here would be going berserk over how he was blocking young players.

He got a 750k prove it deal this year though. Surely his results from last season earned him a league minimum deal.
He only got the 3 year deal on the back of last season and his play to date this season.

This has been apparent for years now.
Not the worst GM in the league, but definitely in the bottom half.

Did he even play with Huberdeau in camp? Honest question.

If Sonny Milano is what you're using to criticize Treliving, you're trying way too hard

When evaluating players, it isn't just a question of whether they are NHLers or not, it is also a question of fit. And for the current version of the Flames, who need more team speed, not less, Milano was not a fit.
End of story.

This is a player that wasn't qualified by one of the worst teams in the NHL and cleared waivers in November

I really wished Milano worked out on the Flames, but he didn’t. Good on him for being able to find a spot that worked for him

Ruzicka has almost identical numbers, is cheaper bigger and still might get better.
What are we mad about here?
