Thats gotta be the largest in history then, I only saw one big one in my life, but it was about 1/3 the size of this one.

According to this (assuming it is current), yes - to the tune of 1800 balloons per day worldwide if I am reading correctly.

Huh...well, in addition to Weather Balloons I learned that the NWS has a website that looks like it was designed back in the GeoCities days.

I am sure alot of people are aware of the Fu-Go balloon bombs used by the Japanese in WWII but I was unaware of this...

Quote:
The remains of balloons have continued to be discovered after the war. At least eight were found in the 1940s, three in the 1950s, two in the 1960s, and one in the 1970s. A device with a live bomb was found near Lumby, British Columbia, in 2014 and detonated by a Royal Canadian Navy ordnance disposal team. Remains of another balloon were found near McBride, British Columbia, in 2019.

Crazy. Probably not something I would put together if I found debris somewhere out there today.

Another one? Shot down over Alaska near the Canadian border apparently.

I am now more convinced it took them a week to reprogram their missiles to target balloons

This is extremely worrisome for geopolitical stability. A 2nd confirmed chinese balloon shotdown over american territory completely invalidates their initial statement. Egg on face for China at the very least.

Whether they care about egg on face internationally is even more worrisome.

If this balloon was launched before the last one was shot down, China's being intentially provocative at this point.

Fun to speculate!

https://twitter.com/user/status/1624135624545427456

For the record, I don't think it's a UAP. We don't have the technology to shoot down objects that move according to the 'five observables'.

US shoots down 'high-altitude object' over Alaska, White House says

ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz first reported that when fighters were scrambled, the pilots did visuals, got images and said there was no sign the object had propulsion.

It was described as "cylindrical and silver-ish gray" and seemed to be floating, a U.S. official said.

Asked if was "balloon-like," the official said, "All I say is that it wasn't 'flying' with any sort of propulsion, so if that is 'balloon-like' well -- we just don't have enough at this point."

I mean, "not flying" and no obvious propulsion would indicate a balloon-like quality to the object. But intriguing details nonetheless.

Cylindrical, but silver. Rules out the Germans then.

I highly doubt they "don't know what it is". They wouldn't just fire on some unknown object.

I think you underestimate the amount of information stove-piping and general lack of cooperation that goes on in the USG military and intelligence complex. I'd bet dollars to donuts the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and even Space Force, the ODNI and CIA are involved and all jockeying for position in a reactive, uncoordinated manner.

Someone probably knows, but probably there's probably tons of unconfirmed scuttlebutt internally about it.
