Exactly. The only thing shiny and new about Gillies is the big ring he'll be receiving from Providence College in a month or two.

It's definitely not "shiny new toy" syndrome for Gillies. I voted for him ahead of Ortio last year too.

Regarding Ferland and his ability to play like he did against the Canucks for 82 games:

I have no doubt that he can't, which means Hartley knows the same thing. The question is, can he turn it on and off on command? If he can, and I'm Hartley, I tell him I want him to play that way against divisional opponents and to tone it down for other regular games. Then balls to the wall for playoffs.

He's new as a pro and as a Flames signed property. He's done well and I like him as well but Ortio is far more proven and in their only comparable at the World Under 20s, Ortio did better.
