Sure they would - they just have to be asked.

Guys turn down $50-60m from teams they’re fed up with.

So once it’s clear they won’t sign, get a list from them. Give us ten teams you’d consider. Eight. Five. Whatever.

The player gets their money, the team that drafted and developed them gets to recoup some of their investment, and the new team gets a shiny toy.

Everybody wins.

I suspect John Klingberg and Johnny Gaudreau are cautionary tales to a lot of guys - going to UFA only to end up on a 1-year deal with the Ducks, or a big deal with Columbus, aren’t what most big time UFAs are envisioning.

Everyone knew Klinberg is no longer the same player except him. Just the case of overrating yourself.

Gaudreau is just a negotiation ####ed up

It doesn't happen often but I'm going to agree with Dino, there is a pretty good reason it's only happened ONCE is NHL history, players don't want to get all the way to UFA to still not have a choice on where you go, even if it is narrowed to five teams

The Tkachuk deal was a sign and trade but only after Tkachuk agreed to it. It was a three way negotiation.

You are talking about signing a guy in the hopes another team likes the deal you sign, and offers a lot for it. That one extra year better be worth a lot.

About 500k over and a year more than what I’d be comfortable giving up for Bo but the Isles have needed another center for a while. Nelson, Horvat, Barzal, and Pageau allows some versatility down the lineup.

Yeah this is exactly how sign and trades work in other sports like the NBA. It's not really a sign and trade if you don't already have the trade worked out.

Right, but people are talking like you should sign the guy to make him more tradeable. That seems a tad risky to me. Especially when the advantage is simply 8 years instead of 7.

Smells like a Skinner contract.
not like they didn't try. Gaudreau took the worst deal in the worst place.

It makes so sense. If the intent is to trade a player, why not let the interested team work out their own contract. It’s better for everyone.
