Sure they would - they just have to be asked.
Guys turn down $50-60m from teams they’re fed up with.
So once it’s clear they won’t sign, get a list from them. Give us ten teams you’d consider. Eight. Five. Whatever.
The player gets their money, the team that drafted and developed them gets to recoup some of their investment, and the new team gets a shiny toy.
Everybody wins.
I suspect John Klingberg and Johnny Gaudreau are cautionary tales to a lot of guys - going to UFA only to end up on a 1-year deal with the Ducks, or a big deal with Columbus, aren’t what most big time UFAs are envisioning.
