A few reasons. First, people like services and local politics are where progressive types (and Nenshi and Gyondak are pretty mild progressives) can offer those most directly.

Second, in the last election there was a big vote split on the right.

Third, there can be a little gerrymandering in constructing ridings for MLas where mayor is just popular vote. It strikes me that left side support in Calgary is probably highest in high density ridings and the UCP takes advantage of clear sailing in less populated ridings.

Also, because Mayor's don't constantly whine about the Federal government. Something that is part in parcel with being a conservative MP or MLA

Because mayoral candidates don't wear team colours, so people vote for the person they think will represent them best.

Yea this is probably it. If the vote was simply between Notley and Smith, Notley would probably win easily. But because it's team orange vs team blue, voters have to be in tribe mentality

So he’s okay with a billionaire welfare program, but god forbid kids can study Filipino culture in school.

Well he wants these filipino kids out of school early so they can build the new arena on $5/hour slave wages.

Noticed that Edmonton is getting skipped on the latest Ed Sheeran tour.

Harry Styles did the same. Just saying...

If Calgary had a suitable venue then those artists may have come to Alberta for 2 shows in our Province wich is more profitable for the big tours and our two cities

I'm the first to say that the missed concert argument is super weak, but Sheeran is doing a stadium tour. Though stadium tours are becoming more and more common, so that in itself undermines the concert argument

Agreed.

Calgary unfortunately doesn't have a stadium suitable for stadium tours, mostly due to noise restrictions.

I wonder if there is another city Calgary's size in the world that lacks a 40-50k sized venue to host such events.

A new 18k sized venue might get a few more concerts, but realistically the big shows are still skipping Calgary because they can't pack 50k fans in anywhere.

I remember being in Edmonton about 5 years ago and they were interviewing a concert promoter on the radio. They tried to give Calgary a shot about not have a new venue like Edmonton did and the promoter fired back saying that’s actually negative for Edmonton too and that he had heard of multiple artists that skip Edmonton as well because it’s too out of the way.

It makes a degree of sense, ditching the civic rivalry for a moment and logistically speaking, stopping in Alberta for one of Edmonton or Calgary may not make a lot of sense or be too much of a hassle, but if a tour could get both you could likely make some good coin.

So what you're saying is that Edmonton should pony up for a new venue in Calgary. I can get behind that.
