Whoever built Rogers Arena probably didn't even add solar panels to it, for shame.

It will show Murray Edwards, who I am sure, will go back to relaxing in his mansion in Switzerland not really giving a damn.

The City will get their wish and be able change the name of the Saddledome to Net Zero Arena, as in no wins, no losses, no goals for, no goals against....

Also a woman of color.. If the mayor was some white dude nobody would even mention this leftist BS.
Same in Arizona, it's always the conservative groups who oppose this stuff see: Goldwater Institute

Murray Edwards himself was a regular donor to the Liberal Party when he lived in Canada. If anything, the "leftist" in this situation is the majority owner who wants public funding.

He's not the majority owner. He's the managing partner.

I can't imagine the amount of garbage Gondek is getting sent her way on the various social media platforms right now. It's probably appalling. Especially since she likely had very little impact on how this came to be and is willing to find additional funding to keep the deal alive.
This thread is such a great example of people only wanting to hear their side, despite people contributing valid and helpful information to the discussion.

Absolutely false. If Gian-Carlo Carra was mayor you'd see exactly the same reaction.

It was privately funded to house both the Canucks and the Grizzlies in a much larger market with many more off-season events (meaning it would have nearly 100% occupancy for much of the year), required the owner to bring on a minority partner to help finance its construction and financing costs, was done at a time when construction was far cheaper than today, and involved a sweetheart land purchase. The total equivalent cost in today's dollars (with the recent spikes in material costs) would be about $300M, which is less than CSEC was prepared to put into this project.
Let's face it, arenas built in small to medium sized markets will not be profitable in themselves. It's only when you consider the boost to the food, retail, and tourism industries that it makes any financial sense at all, but those aren't benefits that are reaped by the franchise owners, but by the community as a whole. Which is why a partnership between the franchise and the municipality makes sense when you're not dealing with a large market. If we don't want that, fine, but then we will have to live without the pride and prestige that come with having a major league sports team and a venue that attracts top artists.

I just scanned Twitter searching for the term "Gondek" and within 15s found a tweet in which some racist dillhole claimed that her agenda was to replace hockey in Calgary with cricket. I can 100% guarantee you that a hypothetical Mayor Carra would not have had a comment like that directed at him.

Can't even come up with an original insult. I'm pretty sure the same comment was directed at Nenshi one of the many previous times the Flames took their ball and went home.

This is not the mayor's decision. It is CSEC's decision based on the requests from Administration.

- A skyline and corporate head office count that put many larger cities to shame.
- Open, sunny skies that light up for sunsets and sunrises.
- Hosted the Olympics.
- Frankly, the Saddledome is more of an icon than the new arena will ever be.
- A people who came together and helped each other recover from the flood.
- Shutting down the city to party for a week every summer, with free breakfasts!
- Being THE leading city in Canada for wealth generation per capita.
- Gateway to the mountains.
- Despite being known as rednecks, we elected a muslim, then a woman (who is presently being villainized) as mayor.
- A great public library, and the NMC.
An NHL team merely puts us in the same category as Winnipeg. The things I listed are what separate us.
