I actually read about the detour but it's a bit confusing if the detour is still open.

Thanks for all the help guys. Was hoping maybe one more day to relax in the mountains but I guess I gotta get back to reality.

Wonder if the rail lines got washed out as well.

This is apparently near someplace called frog rock/tank hill along Hwy 1, west of Thompson? I'm sure there's additional damage that no one has documented yet.

Spoiler!

Power is out completely on west coast now from Tofino all the way to Colwood/Langford. Only coastal communities I saw with power are Ucluelet and Bamfield. It’s crazy because all these recent outages happened 1:30-2:30 with a few being reported around 11:30. That’s a pretty huge area. Victoria still ok though but bchydro crews are going to be busy. My area has at least been assigned a crew.

The wind just got ####ing nuts here in Kelowna, I'm at work and my bay door sounds like it's about to get ripped off

Time to pack up and leave BC to its self destruction.

Place is a hazard.

Now I'm worried about the wind uprooting trees.

With the Coquihalla going down we're an East-West rail line away from having a serious goods transportation problem, no? I imagine there are routes through the States that could absorb some of the traffic, but would expect we could be looking at serious delays in moving things about by ground.

I think it’s pretty well guaranteed that there will be shipping delays. A lot of our goods arrive on the west coast and then get delivered by truck/rail and there are currently no functioning roadways into or out of Vancouver.

Edit: all the rail lines are also out of service (article doesn’t say for how long) so the only way to get goods out of the Port of Vancouver currently would be through the states (and things aren’t looking so good there either).

We've been without power for about 6 hours and the Malahat (5 mins from my place) is completely flooded out. Roads in other areas washed away. It's completely bonkers here. In 15 years of being here this is the worst storm I've experienced.

What is happening with water levels behind dams?

A thought;
Are these normal precipitation levels for a big November storm, but because of a warming climate, we're not seeing snow, but instead rain?

We haven't lost power in Nanaimo...yet. Insanely high water table though. Had to dig trenches in the back yard to pump out water past the house to the ditch in the front alternating with suctioning up water seeping up into the crawl space with the shop vac because the perimeter drains can't keep up.

Crazy ####ing weather.

Yeah there’s another giant storm ripping through Fernie right now. Parts of Hosmer were just evacuated, and that Dicken road detour is still going on.

I was going to head to the city tomorrow but that ain’t happening.

My guess is that it has more to do with the way the North Atlantic is interrupting and slowing down the way the ocean’s vast conveyor belt flows. There were points this past year that it appeared the Fram Strait was nearly motionless as so much fresh water is being added there as Greenland melts off.

That caused an assload of weird weather effects this year due to the jet and gulf streams having totally different patterns. If water doesn’t flow the way it used to, it doesn’t mean that it won’t flow… it just changes where stuff gets deposited and with what energy in my uninformed and amateur opinion.
