I think Float Life is also closed? Maybe I just noticed the sign was gone though and that happened a while ago?

They have a 10th beverage free rewards card which is a plus.

Do you mean the coffee is worse than Starbucks? yikes

Apparently the kickboxing workout place on Kensington Road has a "for lease" sign up now too. That particular building is getting a lot of turnover, time to adjust rents or can the owners afford to sit on empty units?

That seemed like a tough sell to me. I think that the kickboxing fitness fad is probably at the tail end of things for now, but I really can't back that up.

I think the all-meatball menu was the main problem. Could be the same owners?

Sign up on the door at Second Cup stating that it will be re-opening. Looks to be from the corporate side of things versus the letter there last week. Vendome is closing December 15th for renovations and will open again in the spring. They must be expanding into the former Melange space.

The Rocket also closed shop, both in Kensington and on 17th.

Sad to see a classic like them closing, but it looks to be a victim of the irreversible headwinds against brick and mortar retail.
The urban development wonks are going to have to re-examine their love of "fine grain retail" relative to "activating the street" as in reality retail is likely to be a substantially different beast going forward...

I invite you to elaborate on this, and where this sentiment is coming from.

Tangible goods retail is/was ever only a part of the equation...retail services are a much bigger part: banks, fitness, aesthetics, food, food, food, liquor, weed, and other experience based products have emerged to fill the gap (escape rooms, DIY crafts, golf simulators, etc.) - there will always be a demand for most of these things.
Not sure it's on the UD wonks to do very much (unless he means developers)...seems like it's more of an issue for the free market to resolve itself. The total supply of retail space will be continually changing and re-concentrating...sometimes shrinking, sometimes growing.
I'm not sure that failing business models and increasing lease costs are actually very intertwined. If anything, the prevalence of failing businesses might actually help to slow the rate of lease increases.

Tweets about restaurant. Says everyone needs to eat there. Doesn't say name of restaurant.

It's the Cibo group who is reopening the Molly Malone's space. Looks great inside, they've spent some money.
Rumours are that Craft Beer Market has an interest in the Julio's space. Not sure if that's accurate or just made up.

Probably three years ago.
I used to frequent that patio in the summer, while it's not the nicest place on the planet, it's one of the better ones in Calgary on a hot summer day.

Looks like Delicious Thai closed as well. That place started off really strong but got weaker as time went on. Also a lot more good Thai places have opened up since it came around so it was easier to find a good source.
Still sad though.
